Gio Interview Ahead Of Nu:Passion 13th June 2009
The Launch of the first Nu:Passion resident!!

Passion are pleased to announce their first ‘Nu:Passion’ resident DJ! Gio!

First of all it’s a great pleasure to welcome you to the Passion family!....

Q.Nu Passion has been making waves in the trance scene… giving new DJ’s an opportunity to perform on the main stage in the famous blue room! Can you tell us what it meant when you got this opportunity?
A.It was like all of my birthdays and Christmases at once! I’ve only ever wanted to play at Passion so just to play in any room is fantastic but to play in the main room was a dream come true! I never thought I would get to see what it would looks like to play to a packed passion main room where so many of my heroes have stud and played. Even my mum came to watch!

Q.Following on that question… what does Passion mean to you and what does it feel like to be one of the Resident DJ’s?
AMAZING!! Passion always has and always will be my favourite night so just to play is an honour and to be a resident is supersonic-megatastic lol. Passion has been my reason for going to work all week for years and has made me so many new friends. I had to wait from 13 to 18 before I could come whilst all my peers used to wind me up about seeing Paul Oakenfold, PVD, Tiesto etc and now I’m part of the team! The flyers of every Passion since i was 13 decorate my wall at home! I always play every set at Passion like it could be my last so I make sure it counts.

Q. Can you tell us a little about you? How long have you been DJ’ng? Who are you influences etc..!
I really love trance, I really love djing and I really, really love clubbing! I got my first pair of decks when I was 13 and they have taken over my life ever since! I’ve always tried to keep up to date with the technology available and am currently studying music tech at college. I’ve got the best mates in the world who all come and support me. Mr Rob Dalby gave me my first set out and I’ve been a resident at Boshed, Baby Slinky and still am for my good friend Jimmy Dean at Xstatic. My main technical influences would be Eddie Halliwell (Eddie! Eddie! lol) and James Zabiela. I love their effects and turntablism filled sets. Passions own JFK has always been a hero because he is a true entertainer. I listen to and play all sorts of music. I’ve even had a taste for mega-death drum and bass recently!

Q. What are you going to bring to Passion/Nu:Passion that it doesn’t have already?
There are so many awesome dj’s who play at Nu-Passion but I think I play just a little bit harder than the majority of the dj’s who play and maybe that’s why I often play later on, so it gives me a bit more range to play just a bit quicker too whilst staying suitable to trance.

Q.What can the clubbers expect from GIO? Tell us a little about your sets.. what they consist of and what they can expect on the dancefloor…
Cutting, Scratching, Accapella’s, bootlegs and anything I can mash-up into tech-trance! I use a lot of effects and try to mix quite quickly so the energy doesn’t drop. I’m quite into my bands so I like to try and throw some indie/rock inspired bootlegs in. Like I have already said I always play every set at passion like it could be my last so I enjoy myself and hopefully that shows.

Q. Can you tell us what you think about nu:passion? And the concept of giving new up and coming DJ’s a chance to shine in a big venue…
Nu-Passion is what the UK trance scene has been crying out for. It provides the opportunity for all the Nu-Passion dj's to get their music out there and play in the one of the best clubs in the country which can only ever provide more exposure. More than that it offers hope to all bedroom trance dj’s that want to break into the scene. I like how Goodgreef and PFA specialise in new cutting edge talent and put a lot of effort into promoting their own dj's which must work because where would Goodgreef be without the mighty Halliwell, Alex Kidd, Adam Sherriden, Shan etc, all home grown talent and there is no reason why Nu-Passion cant become as successful using the same ethics. Anyone who has been to a Nu-Passion night will know there is a lot of really good dj’s associated with the night and there is no better stage to showcase it than the emporium.

Q. Can you tell us a few big tunes from your box?
I love pretty much anything by John O’Callaghan, Simon Patterson, Scot Project, Kamui and anything that has got a lot of energy or has some dirty bass. That Genix guy is on fire at the moment too :p The first record i ever bought was Gouryella by Gouryella so that would probably be my favourite ever tune.

Q. Many have already seen your sets… which I have to say are technically superb! Can you tell the clubbers the concept of your performance… and what you use to generate the effect filled sets?
I just practise bucket loads and try and know my tunes inside out. Some tricks only work with certain tracks or sounds so practising a lot helps. I normally always use an EFX1000 (Magic effects box!) in my sets and that’s what I use to create some of the sounds you might hear. Different music gets mixed in different ways so when I’m practising I mix all sorts of music and try to grab bits out of different styles.

Q: so now the clubbers who visit Passion will be able to see GIO at every single event…! Do you have any messages to them??
Yes come and say hello! I’m the least scariest person in the world so if you have anything Nu-Passion related (i.e. Ideas, requests, demos) or if you just want to come say HEEEEYYY GIIIOOO then do and we can talk space, time and Passion! Otherwise I’ll see you on the dance floor ;)
COME ON PASSION!!!

Thanks for your time.. we are all looking forward to GIO!!! COME ON PASSION!!!
