THE FACTS Mephedrone has been found in capsules and powders and can be purchased from the web where it is sold as ‘plant feeder’ or a ‘research chemical’. Effects are said to be like MDMA. It may produce euphoria, alertness, talkativeness and feelings of empathy, but also anxiety and paranoid states in some, and a risk of over stimulation of the heart and the nervous system (including risk of fits). Some reports say it can be compulsive to use and create a state of psychological dependence. There are also anecdotal reports of possible dependence and concern about problems reported by psychiatrists seeing affected cases.
STREET NAMES Mieow, Meow, Meph, Mephedrone, MCAT, 4MMC
LEGAL STATUS Mepehedrone is illegal to be sold, supplied or advertised for human consumption. It’s legal status is being reviewed under the Misuse of Drugs Act by the government. Mephedrone has recently been made illegal in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Israel due to growing evidence of harms, including a reported possible cause of death. Cathinone is controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, but substituted cathinones which include: 4-methylmethcathinone (mephedrone, 4-MMC); 4-methoxymethcathinone (methedrone) and the cathinone analogue of MDMA, methylone are currently not controlled.
OUR THOUGHTS We spoke to some users that had tried the drug, here are some of the effects that they experienced. REPORT 1 - 400mg - powder in capsules - 8 hours > Quite a clean buzz, a bit like MDMA but a little less intense > Talkativeness > Extremely Happy > Breathlessness > Wobbly eyes - they kept flicking left to right. Very strange feeling. > After about an hour and thre quaters all we wanted was more. > No comedown REPORT 2 - 700mg - snorted - 8 hours. > Like doing Ecstasy for the first time > Mild hallucinations > Extremely horny > Snorting it feels a bit like snorting fire > Massive memory loss of events that happened during the 8 hours > Nose hurt for days > Comedown was horrible REPORT 3 - 500mg - powder in capsules - 3 hours > Took it with lots of booze > Happy feeling > Spacey > Energetic > Loved up > Hangover / comedown was pretty bad! Everyone seems to have a different take on how good the buzz was and how bad the comedown was. No one had the same story. Snorting this stuff HURTS, and has been known to cause severe nose bleeds. I think that just goes to show that you really don't know what is in the little baggy you get off the web. Just because it says legal, doesn't mean it's safe and with reports like this out there, is it really worth the risk? YOUR THOUGHTS? Have you, or do you know anyone that has taken Mephedrone? What effects did it have on you? Do you think it is dangerous? How do you feel about the legal status of the drug?
