Glade Preview With Berlin Producer Marc Romboy

How’s life treating you Marc, what have been up as of late?
Hey, life is treating me excellently! I really can´t complain, although there is always something you could find (laughs). I´m currently very busy with setting up my life show for Glade. It´s my debut life show and I will be on stage with my buddy Namito who has developed everything together with me. We will be on stage with two huge Emulator touch screens which have a size of 46 inch. As far as I know no one has done this ever before. One of us will play Traktor DJ and one of us will use the music sequencer Live 8. We are very excited about it and it will be unforgettable!

Without labelling you, your productions range from various infusions of, house, deep house, techno, electro house and I’m sure much more. How do you make these transitions work and what effects do these different elements have on your overall work?

Well, the variety of my output comes from the matter of fact that we called everything House and Techno, when everything started in the early 90s, you know? I´m bored in the studio if I will have to produce only one direction of music. I know that that I´m not easy to categorize but if you know me better you can follow my vibes easily (smiles).

Your releases go all the way back to 1999. So you’ve been producing for over two decades now, wow. How do you think your production had progressed over those years and how has the scene changed?

I think that the use of virtual instruments has changed a lot. Back in the days you needed an expensive studio to produce professional music and now you just need a superior talent to do this. This is a new dimension of democracy to me and I like this situation a lot. Talking about the question what is better or different nowadays bores me a little bit because we should enjoy the now and the music we just hear in this second. Past is past, future is future, both time periods are not real.

What’s your opinion on the current state of the underground music scene?

I love it because sky is the limit at the moment. If you don´t put pressure on yourself you will be able to produce and compose what ever you want. It´s freedom which commercial chart acts and artists do not have. Just have a look on all these hip hop acts jumping on the electro house bandwagon. I don´t feel this urge at all…

I understand this is your first time playing at the Glade Festival, what are you most looking forward to?

I'm a huge fan of festivals, the atmosphere, the mood, the craziness of the people and the happy faces. I experienced already many amazing open air events and cannot get enough of it. So far I have only seen pictures and movies of Glade but they say already a lot. I really can´t wait to perform there and I´m sure we all will have a good time altogether.

Have you got any mad festival stories for us?
Oh, well, you know, I think everybody can tell some obscure experiences during festivals but something which always stays in mind is the matter of fact how warm and intense most of them are. This is why I am fan.

What are your top 5 festival must haves?
A picture of my daughter, warm and waterproof clothes and shoes, my iPhone, a bottle of water and being in a good mood!

You’ve worked behind the scenes of many record labels and you run your own label, Systematic Recordings. Do you have any tips for those looking to start up their own label?

I think the best tip is to let it be (laughs very loud)! No, but honestly, it´s very easy setting up a label and being connected to iTunes and other online shops but the real challenge is to sell your music and therefore you need professional background or help. And this support you can rather get when you sign to a good and established label and rather focus on your music productions.

Who’s currently at the top of your playlist, anyone we should be listening out for?
I play a lot of stuff which has been produced by my Bulgarian friend KiNK. I am currently working on our second EP together and I´m already pretty excited. But when it also comes to his solo works it´s exactly what I love to play at the moment. He is a genius and who knows how to combine cool club sounds with energetic drums and rhythms. Watch out to see him live, his show is amazing!!!

What’s on the horizon for Marc Romboy?
I´m currently busy with my third solo album and hope it will be ready one day (smiles).

Marc Romboy will be playing his live set on the main stage at Glade Festival which takes place between 14-17 June at Houghton Hall, Nr Kings Lynn, Norfolk. gladefestival.com
