We Love Astrix 001 preview with Nicki S

One of the UK's top female DJs, Aussie-born Nicki S's futuristic hard dance has seen her grace the desks of many of the world's top clubs. Now the Extreme Euphoria and Innovate promoter and ressie has taken a turn for the psychedelic, things can only get way more interesting. This Saturday she's warming up for HOMmega production wizard and DJmag No.18 DJ Astrix at Turnmills' first - and possibly last - proper psy trance event and she's even made a special track to christen in that wonderous booth. On the eve of Nicki's first big psy set at We Love Astrix 001, she tells us what she really loves...

What was it about psy trance that made you fall in love with it?

The groove, the detail, the energy, the fun and funkiness as well as the many shades of psy trance from progressive right through to full-on. The psy artists take great pride in their work, from the production of their music right through to the presentation of their work.

Plus the parties are AMAZING! Especially when they are outdoors.

What do you love the most about your job?

I love meeting so many different characters and making new friends all over the world, plus I love seeing so many people having the time of their life on the dance floor. The energy is unbeatable.

What psy trance DJs and producers did you love seeing and hearing in 2007?

Sub6, Xerox & Illumination, Perplex and Alien Project are massive sources of inspiration to me. I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing and playing a lot of their music.

Who would you love to see break through in 2008?

I think 2008 will be a break through year for Nick Sentience into the psy world. He’s always crossed over into this territory and played at many psy events/festivals but his new album (newly underway) is very focused on world dance music and this massive global trance phenomena that we know as psy.

Where did you love playing the most in 2007?

London crowds are always fantastic. They really go off. I also loved playing out in Ibiza over the summer.

What software and hardware do you love using in the studio at the moment?

Apple Mac G5, Logic 7, Virus Ti and the Roland JP8000. The ES2 is an essential and the BitCrusher is also very cool.

Which ten tracks do you love the most right now?

Some are oldies and some are new…. What ever rocks the dance floor!

Sub6 — ‘Stand By Me’
Nicki S — ‘Towards the light’
Nicki S — ‘Psywhore’
XI — ‘No Way Out’
Shanti — ‘Tingling Sensations’
Astral Projection — ‘The Prophecy’
Alien Project — ‘Deeper’
Space Tribe or ESP — ‘Rabbit Hole’
Perplex — ‘City of dust’
Shanti — ‘Spirit Horse’ (Sub6 remix)

Where would you love to be in five years time?

Living in the tropics doing tunes with a margarita and a big smile on my face!

What do you love doing the most on your days off?

I don’t often get time off. Spare days for me involve tune hunting, studio sessions or chilling with friends.

What drink would you love your fans to buy you at the bar at Turnmills next Saturday night?

Tequila!

Thanks Nicki! See you at Turnmills!
