Interview with this Fridays Rectify guests KAMUI.

KAMUI - Patrick Scheidt & Dominik Felsmann

1. Hi guys so are you looking forward to your first gig in Scotland with Rectify, have you heard much about the Scottish crowds?

We recently talked to Frank (Scot Project) about the scottish crowd and from what he told us there’s a lot to expect. We’re really excited to play out in Glasgow for the first time. Not only because of the crowds but also to hear your accent ;-)

2. Can you give us a little background info on your dj/production careers and how it all started?

It all started back in 2003 when Pat and I met on an internet platform for music production. We met in spring and fell in love with each other…
We just had the same goals in mind, the same taste of music and the same humour so after 1-2 months our first productions were ready to be released. Our first Kamui single was produced in early 2004 after getting in touch with the real Hardtrance of Scot Project, Derb & Co… From this point on we continuously focused on developing our own style which sounds like our recent productions. Hardtrance “feeling” but a mixture of a lot of different dance music styles in one track.

3. You have had releases under a few different aliases, is Kamui your main focus now?

The first was with Virus Inc when we were 15 and 16. At that time we produced some typical German “hands up” tracks, some of you might know ‘The Virus’, which was played by Yoji Biomehanika and many others at that time. In 2004 we got infected by “real” hard trance, inspired by a set from Kai Tracid. We produced Kamui ‘Ghosts’, which was signed to Overdose, and some other projects such as ‘Synthflut’, ‘Black Phaze’ and ‘Benjamin R’. Due to the success of ‘Ghosts’ we decided to put most of our efforts on the Kamui project and tried to develop an outstanding and recognisable sound.

4. Who would you say has been your biggest influences?

Definitely people like Scot Project, Flutlicht, Cosmic Gate.

5. Other than yourselves, what other dj/producers are doing it for you at the moment?

Hard to answer that one. Basically we're listening to different styled sets from slow Minimal/Electro to Trance/Techtrance and Hardtrance/Hardstyle. And then we're like: that song is cool, this song is cool rest is not ha ha. So yes, it's rather the single tracks that we judge, not any Djs/Producers in general.

6. Has music production something that you’ve always seen yourselves doing?

Not really, it just happened. After years of playing several instruments you're thinking: This is getting boring. I want to create my own music. So you sit down and get started and you just get more and more involved it.

7. What kind of studio equipment can you find in your studio?

We’re actually pretty oldschool concerning the equipment. We’ve got the usual synthesizers, some effects, a digital console, and a computer. There's not much point in spending ages on a software synthesizer, tweaking the sound into something bearable when the hardware sounds phat right from the start and the handling of hardware is much more intuitive anyway. There’s a little picture on our Myspace for those who are interested in how it looks like in our studio...

8. What else do you like to get up to when not spending time producing tracks?

Actually studying takes most of our time, Pat’s studying law and I’m enrolled in an international business course. Besides that we’re doing what everybody else does, meeting friends, going out etc.

9. You played the massive Dance Valley festival in Amsterdam last year, how did that feel and would you say that’s been the highlight of your careers so far?

Definitely! It was crazy to be part of such a huge festival. Big reward for all the hard studio work!

10. You’ve just released your new single Electro Slut which is massive! What else do you have in the pipeline for 2008?

There are a couple of productions waiting to be finished. We’ll complete some more tracks within the next weeks and you’ll hear some unreleased stuff at Rectify.
We’ll definitely try to continue what we’re doing right now, giving our best to deliver you fresh goods.

11. How are you coping with the demand for dates in Germany, Canada, Sweden, UK and tours of Australia, must be a tough job ha!

Nah, it's a pleasure and the greatest job to be able to see all those countries and to meet so many different people who are all connected through the music. It's amazing to tour countries like Australia every year. We actually had more gigs Down Under than we had in our home country. That's really cool and good stuff to tease our friends with in Germany. Hehe.

12. Finally for anyone coming along to see you guys at Rectify can you give a little idea of what to expect from your set?

There’ll be some new exclusive productions, mash-ups and bootlegs along with our released Kamui tunes and our favorite songs of other producers. Maybe Dom will do a lap dance as well, but I reckon I need to feed him lots of alcohol first.... Just kidding, he will do it anyway ;-)

13. Thanks for taking the time do answer these questions and look forward to seeing you guys next week.

No worries! Thanks for the interview. We cant wait to see you guys next weekend. If you want to get in touch do so on our Myspace: www.myspace.com/kamuimusic
