Belfast NYE @ The Metro, Melbourne (31/12/06)
Another glorious night at Melbourne’s veteran venu/training ground, The Metro. Content with an abundance of room to dance, as opposed to the usual sardine style turn out, The Metro had a very casual though radiant feel to it, catering for the New Year recruits.

Upon arrival I was greeted with the pervasive dynamism of Richie Rich, who stimulating and energising the stupified revellers with his mixture of progressive, trance and tech. In its habitual tradition the lighting and sound technicians provided a digital spectacle, complete with exquisite lasers and strobes, in conjunction with super crisp sonic frequencies.

FSOM (Future Sound Of Melbourne) conspired to present a satiating fusion of Chicago house and Baltimore induced resonance for the placid citizens, computing indeed a visionary collection of platinum sounds. Not delving too deep into the caverns of their stage predecessors, they left the ‘Metro’nomes with eager smiles on their dials. A veritable prophecy composed by two Melbourne veterans.

The muster multiplied when – the paramount – CJ Bolland electrified the comparatively moderate crowd into a frenzied fever, spilling out a deep, dark manipulative and meticulous medley of funky findings. Predestined to shake the crowd to its foundations, CJ offered eclectic rhythms, constantly fluctuating the moods of The Metro massive. Sanctioned to stun, CJ left no room to rest for the diabolic and dedicated throng of eager civilians on the dancefloor.

The excitable villains of the venue converged submissively to the dexterous grooves and anthems that CJ emanated. CJ’s warrant to uphold the law of The Ravesignal and empowering inception galvanised the somewhat meagre crowd to a kinetic cadence. Though lacking in intensity, the diligent approach rendered a satisfied and composed audience.

The mastermind delivered a versed amalgam of acid house, grimey techno, euphoric electro, compulsive synth-infused new wave, hypnotic trance and abstract breakbeat style progressive, adding superfluous credit to his expansive and ingenious profile. Bolland’s pollen had all the bees flocking. An intricate repertoire to say the least, CJ maintained his immortalised stature.

The upper glass room played host to a miscellany of choice blends with the likes of local connoisseurs Dave Pham, Simon Coyle and Matt Radovich guiding the herd with clout. Steve Strangis, X-Statik, Soul T and Karpe DM spilling the illness in the canopy, with trance anthems the soundtrack to this realm.

The Acid Jacks consortium assisted the apparent acid-heads with a crafty voyage of undefined synchronicity and transcendental array of spellbinding material. A psychedelic motley would be the apt description for this entourage. It was about this time I took a breather and eased into their malleable resonance. Comprehensive details are vague and probably not expected in retrospection of it being the advent of a new year.

Then there was Midro, who led the legacy with prowess, transcending the space cadets into oblivion with delight, sporadically increasing the pace to cater the whims of the haggard remnants.

In summary the night comprised of remarkable tunes, ample space, a cultured crowd and a new year. A notable night to set the futuristic vogue for 2007.
