This article is about Snowbombing 2010 @ Mayrhofen - Austria in Innsbruck (Austria), Mon 05 Apr 2010
What a week! It's really hard to explain how much fun Snowbombing actually is. We all had such a great time out there. Click to read the full review!
Dave and I were on the press trip that left early Monday morning from Heathrow so we decided to bed down at the premier inn on the Sunday night. It was only £25 each! Lenny is right! Everything is premier but the price! We awoke early and headed over to the airport to meet Juliet from Mixmag, Graeme from Data transmission and all the Snowbombing PR peeps.
Everyone was in a jolly mood as we jumped on the flight to Munich. At the other end we had a 2.5 hour bus journey (out came the jager) to the sleepy little town of Mayrhofen. We arrived to beautiful sunshine and a high street lined with Snowbombing bunting. It was obvious that the festival had had a bit more cash pumped into it this year as every other car was a volvo with a snowbombing logo on the side! They were everywhere!!
We settled in to our room in the Strass hotel - which is basically SB HQ. Really nice hotel that feeds you and sorts you out with a sauna / steam room / spa after a day on the slopes.
The first port of call for us was Dave Beer's back country party. This involved jumping on another bus, and travelling into deepest darkest Austria for 40 mins or so. We went through a magical 1 way tunnel that only opened at certain times through the day and only had 1 lane! It also seemed to have been freshly dug - the walls were made of mud rather than concrete. When we came out of the tunnel we were in avalanche country. Looking out the window of the bus literally 1 in every 5 trees had been ripped out by falling boulders - brilliant! The perfect place for some heavy Dave Beer baselines!!?? Round the bends we went, and across the tanoy, one of the SB PR's said "and this is where we thank god we have an Austrian bus driver rather than an English one!!". The driver then 3 point turned the bus and began reversing up the mountain!!
Thankfully shortly after this we arrived and jumped out to find a small Austrian shack with a fire outside and a little Austrian boy playing the accordion to welcome us all in.
From then on it was beers and chats with lots of interesting peeps. We also started the game - Put juliet in something. We firstly put her in a cauldron, and then in the top baggage rack of the bus.
Excellent! We ended up back at Mayrhofen at about midnight for the Mixmag Party in the Schlussel with Riva Starr, Caged Baby, Loose Cannons and a few others. I absolutely love this venue. It's a low celling sweaty pub that gets rammo and seriously rocks. We also hooked up with some of the german "schnappes" girls we met last year. They were on top form and absolutely destroyed everyone at table football. Very funny!
Up early with a bit of a hang over to see if I could get on a Snowboarding lesson. Managed to find the instructor just as he was running off to the Ski lift. Sorted. Managed to get a weeks worth of lessons as Press. By the end of the week i'd be in the half pipe!
Ran back to my room - got sorted and jumped on the monster 'Penken' cable car that goes up to the DSI / Mixmag Mountain terrace. There I met my lesson group - a nice bunch and I knew one of them from previous festival antics. Did three hours of boarding through the afternoon starting on some horrible steep stuff and then ending on the flat stuff. It was good to jump in at the deep end just to know that we could all heel edge down anything and there wasn't any point in being scared of steep bits!
Back down the penken to the bottom floor of the Strass - The amazing Spa with jacuzzi, 4/5 steam/sauna rooms, and a big pool... and the best bit? It's strictly nude! haha saw a few nobs and boobs and relaxed the hell out. So so so good to jump in a jacuzzi after hitting the slopes!
That night we scored some tickets to the White lounge igloo. It has to be the best venue i've ever been in. 2000 feet up, on a snowy mountain sits a two room igloo with ice sculptures and bar. There is also an outside bar and huge fire to huddle and dance around.
This was Jade Jaggers Jezebel night and it was rather spiffing. Loads of people in fancy dress too, the night ended with a line up of costumed freaks on the inside bar pouring jagermiester down into the open mouthed crowd! Very sticky!
At about midnight we had to walk back down to the 150 man cable car for the journey home. Everyone was on top form! The guys in front of me were quoting Flight of the Conchords lyrics so I told them "it's business time". 5 minutes later the whole cable car was singing "IITTT''SS BUUUSSINNNEESSS - IITt'SS BBUUISSINNEESS TIMMMMMEE!". Hilarious.
When we landed we went to the the Racket club for Adam Beyer. The music was really good but the crowd was a little small (that may have been because it was 5am - i'm not sure) - it didn't really matter though as the music was pumping and everyone was up for it.
Woke up wanting to die. Decided I couldn't miss my snowboard lesson at Midday. Big mistake. Got up, ran, to the lift getting a UFO shaped bit of pig in a bun from 'Hans' the butcher on the way.
Snowboarding with a hangover, and feeling sick is probably not a good idea on a normal day, but it was like summer up there too, so there is me in full winter snowboard gear with girls in bikinis wandering around.
Not fun! I felt sick, managed about 3 turns in three hours, went the wrong way, lost my group and ended up on a windy muddy blue run. Eurgh. Knackered.
Went home. Got in bed. Missed the street party. Crashed. Burned.
The day of our Mountain terrace DJ party! Woke up feeling fresh. Grabbed the monster bottle of Jager and my bus shaped mug and headed up the mountain on the first lift so I could get some riding in before. Met Olly from my 1st day lesson. Snowboarding with someone at your own level is SO much more fun that with people who are a lot better than you! Make yourself known on Facebook if you are about Olly - we should hook up next year for more off pisting! haha.
We had a good few runs on the slopes and we were both getting the hang of linking turns. Olly went off to his afternoon lesson at 12 and I wandered over to the Mountain terrace to meet a few of the DSI heads that had congregated to listen to Jon Nelson who was first up on the decks. Great set mate! A really nice start to the day.
Next up was Tina. Another banging set and and as she came on we all started riding the bus. I managed to trap Carrie on the bus for a deck and a half! hahaha Sorry lady! :D
SamLW played a great little hip hop set and then Munich monsters Edwin and Sinnamix destroyed the mountain with some Drum and Bass. Lovely stuff. Adam then came on and Liquifed us all with some more smooth tunes, and Mr Motivator came on after and did a 15 minute warm down. That left the final 45 minutes for Pepper and Kenny to take us to the lift. Lovely stuff boys - where the hell did you get that mephedrone tune from?!?!
haha "WHEERRESS MYY MONEY!??!"
Back in town for 5ish - Put my penguin outfit on. Dave, Jonney, ankle and Rodney all dressed up as grannies. Went for a steak at Mo's. First time i'd eaten anything decent all day and it felt gooooooooood. We then played the drinking game "ring of fire" until about 1am. I bloused it and went to bed opting for some decent snow in the morning, the others carried on till the morning. Oh the shame.
Final day. Woke up still in the penguin suit, and got on the first lift with Dave. We spent the morning up the penken doing a few of the red runs and then came back down for lunch and met a few of the mixmag girls. The afternoon we spent at the clash party in the Igloo. That place is AMAZING during the day. We sat in deck chairs in shorts and t-shirts - Check out the video.
Great snow and AMAZING views. The blue run up the top of the Ahorn was pretty gentle but great for working on your turns, I did a few little nice 360's! woo.
We saw the whip do a little live set which was great. Eva playing the beer bottles was funny!
We ended the day in the forest listening to DJ Yoda, De La Soul and finally Fatboy Slim. Oh my god was he on form! Watch the video - He was SOOO pumped and the crowed were really reacting to it. Catch him this summer - he is on fire. Stay off the booze Norman! That's the best set i've ever seen him play by a mile. WATCH OUT - THE SOUND IS A BIT LOUD!
The only complaint anyone seemed to have was the £4 for a thimble sized beer in the forrest! boooo!
The next day we woke up and jumped on the Press bus back to the airport. Poor old Rory went and put his foot in it saying something like "DJ Yoda wasn't as good as Fatboy slim - I was expecting more visual stuff" We realised about 5 minutes later that Yoda was sat behind us and had suddenly gone very quiet! hahaha AHHH. It was bound to happen sooner or later, there were top DJ's on every corner. That's just the way it goes at Snowbombing. Ah well - we offered him a chocolate biscuit a bit later. I hope that made up for it a little bit!!
Well that's it. Well done to the Snowbombing team, another brilliant year in the mountains!
See you ALL next year!
P.S Many thanks to the DSI togs out there. You guys did a great job - You can check out ALL the best snowbombing pics on DSI here: Snowbombing 2010
