Roland Rat was a loud-mouthed, cockney egomaniac rodent who lived with his extended family in the sewers under Kings Cross Station, London. Roland first appeared in his Amazing Shedvision Show in 1983 on the flagging breakfast TV programme TVam . The station's viewing figures rocketed (the first case of a rat saving a sinking ship?).

Roland went on to star in:

* Rat On The Road , in which he toured Britain in his pink Ratmobile
* Roland's Winter Wonderland , in which he went skiing in Switzerland
* Roland Goes East , in which he visited Hong Kong
* Rat On The Road II , in which he toured Britain again
* Various studio-based shows

In 1985, he left TVam to work for the BBC, who used him for two series titled Roland Rat - The Series , and then dropped him like a hot potato.

Roland's various companions included:

* Kevin, a slightly effeminate gerbil from Leeds in West Yorkshire, UK
* Errol, a leek-eating, male-voice-choir-loving Welsh hamster
* Glenys, Roland's girlfriend, an extremely posh guinea pig
* Little Reggie, Roland's irritating younger brother

At the height of his fame, Roland managed to score two top 40 hit singles: 'Rat Rapping'

Roland Rat was the intellectual property of David Claridge who’s only previous claim to fame was running a bondage-oriented sex shop. This was something the press would have fun with in the years to come. His newest occupation, operating ‘The Rat’ as AM staffers called it, was definitely a change for him. It also relieved us from the tedium of producing "World of Melanie Parker." This was a high brow mix of comedy and fantasy, acted by a bunch of relatively well-known actors who should have known better. ‘Parker’ was to drag on for another 6 long weeks, before mercifully being put to death by the Aitkens.

When in action, Claridge would have one hand inside the Rat’s body, with the other in one of its arms. The other arm was moved by a succession of helpers who also would be responsible for any other puppets as required. This entourage steadily grew as popularity forced the addition of more characters.

He also supplied the Rat’s voice, through a microphone which was mounted on a sweat band style helmet. He received orientation through a small monitor, which we altered to provide a mirror image. This reverse picture actually made it easier for him to operate the puppet, as it acted more like a mirror in that configuration.

Originally brought in to the station by Head of Children’s programming Anne Wood the Shedvision show, although having in itself little impact, showed that the rat had potential.

Long Live Roland Rat.
