Your Friday discussion topic for today...
Is anything worth anything anymore?

DJs - glorified ticket agents...

Web Design - I saw someone offering site builds for £50 and a "hot box" for £20!

Dancers - I could have a different troop of "dancing" girls every night if I wanted.. for free.. which is actually tempting...

Photographers - any pro-spotters still able to charge more than a few beers n petrol money?

Producers - there's so many wannabe producers with a whole cracked studio in abox, you can get them for £75 a track now, no wonder beatport is full of clone-a-tracks in the latest electro-tech-hard-mnml-grime-bassline-bouncecore or whatever this weeks cool genre is.

The sad thing is, I haven't even had to exaggerate to make my point, you can find all these things on DSI without much effort.

Here is my question...

What is worth anything now?

I'm worried everyone is working shite jobs they don't really like, sitting on facebook and dreaming of being a Dj/dancer/photog/web-designer/cat tamer/reality tv star/singer* (*delete as applicable) when really its only ever going to be a hobby.

Kinda sad, I feel like everyones deluded... or am I talking shit?

The market is pretty much being swamped. New technology is becoming cheaper and easier to obtain, leading to more people being able to do stuff, meaning prices fall sharply as people try and undercut each other.

Beatport deals with the whole mass produced crap by setting quotas on how much revenue a label needs to generate each quarter, though some labels get round this by simply releasing more crap to get their totals up.

As for the dancing girls, I've never really had any dealings with them, and the dancing couple that I do know seem fairly sound.

Nail. Head. DJing/dancing/photographer/etc is escapism, pure and simple. If people can forget the doldrums of their 9-5 by a quick bit of social networking and bigging themselves up online, then fair play to them. And you say it as hobby - this means that at least they have the 9-5 to pay the bills etc. Nothing wrong IMO with dreaming about how you'd like to make, escapism is perfectly natural and is part of the human condition.

if nobody had dreams to do things like this then nothing would ever get done? the fact that more ppl do it now, is good it means there will deffinately be lots of good music, dancing girls, and cat tamers. there will be alot of shit ones as well but that doesnt matter. and fuck me with the state of what most ppl call normal life at the moment, who doesnt need some escapism?

90% of profile pics on here have people in DJ poses... but I'm yet to see one of someone taming a cat. Cat taming is underrated.

There have always been crap tunes made, the power of digital stores is that its quicker to scan listen to all the crap that the old process of getting in the car, driving to the record shop the wading throught the shit that they try to palm off on you.

no i was just worried about the mental state of a couple of deluded people I'd read posts from recently.

More than escapism, they really seemed to believe that Djing/dancing/taking pictures for free would lead them to some new shiny super life... when they were mixing a beatport top 10/fat (sorry but no for a dancer)/had no eye for a good shot. sad

Nathan Barley syndrome I reckon - because people can do it, they assume they should do it, and that in doing so will by default become the best at it.

the thing is ppl who do have genuine talent will make it regardless of how many other idiots think they r the next tiesto or whatever, and the fact ppl can feel like they are taking part js cos they shoot a few snaps for a site like this is also good! blissful ignorance. they arent stopping anyone else doing anything + they are quite funny 2 laugh at?
