Arsenal in crisis!
Flamini gone for free, Hleb leaving for £3m - absolutely terrible news for Arsenal. Flamini can probably be replaced, as his main asset is his workrate, but that combined with Hleb going, one of our star performers this season, is a huge blow.

Wenger simply has to open up the chequebook this summer and spend big. With two first teamers leaving, and the need for at least three new players even if the squad had stayed together, I would say that £60-70m must be spent to ensure top four status next season.

On the shopping list must be a defensive midfielder, centre back and winger(s). Wenger has to put his ego aside for a moment and realise that some of the current squad aren't up to it. If there is money to spend, he needs to be making moves for players now.

That didnt count for £100k a week Henry and £75k Fabregas though

As I said, it was understanding.. obviously wrong ! my point is still the same. A wage cap would help prevent players just up and leaving.

Hey Mark ! remember where you heard Berbs was leaving 1st ;0)... and it's not just about C/L footy either...

Please, this is an Arsenal thread, can we not pollute it with talk of mid-table nothing clubs?

Anyway, I think you'll find every club (perhaps bar Chelsea) has a wage structure. No club just pays whatever the player wants, just look at the recent Wes Brown saga to back up my point. Just because Cesc, Henry, Gallas etc might be paid more than the rest of the squad, doesn't mean they don't fit into the structure. It means Wenger has chosen to allocate his wage budget as he sees fit.

Bit like the Americans with their Basketball etc..They have a set amount for wages. lets say $20 million.. if they choose to pay Michael Jordan $15 million then they have to divide the remaining $5million between the rest of the squad..... They get no more money !

Thing is with a wage cap do you have one set wage for all OR do you do as Wenger (or whoever calls the shots) has done and pay one or two players more because of whatever reason? Going back to my original point surely that kind of set up might breed resentment in other members of the team? Football is a team sport ansd as much as you'd like to say Cesc or Gallas is more talented they didn't win matches on their own.

At the end of the day as Jack pointed out they have a fleet of youngsters waiting in the wings to do the business. Whether they will or not is anyone's guess. Like the man said they shut up a lot of critics this season so who knows.

Let Flamini leave in peace, they offered him a deal and it didn't favour him so he made a choice and in terms of financial common sense it was the right one when you consider a football players career could be ended everytime he steps on the pitch,

It's well documented that I dont like Arsenal.. What Spurs fan does...? What football fan apart from gooners do ? Anyway, I digress. I have to say it would be refreshing to see all clubs follow the Arsenal lead to stop players like Flamini doing what they are doing. It would perhaps bring back loyalty to the club paying their wages if they knew they couldn't get better or the same elswhere...

My first time ever agreeing with this lad, drop your pants mate I owe you 1!!

Err ! thanx for the offer fella think I'll give it a miss this time.. if that's what you offer when agreeing with me/people then I 'd rather you didn't agree with anything I do or say.... ;0)

Jason, it seems to work in the States... some of them earn far more that the highest paid Prem players.. ergo Michael Jordan, Shaquel O'Neil in Basketball for example... David Beckham is the highest earner at LA Galaxy.. I know that MLS has a wage cap so some other players wont be earning anything like he is... (Well that was certainly the case when I worked for MLS)

Back to the reason this thread started and Flamini's Admireable AC who managed to fuck up yet again and now are 5th in Serie A with only one game still to go!

For fuck sake if he wanted more money and a UFEA cup place next season why didn't he just ask David Moyes if he had anything going!

Bit harsh on flam no? Say what you like about them but AC are still a one of the biggest clubs in the world and other than British players, most footballers would jump at the chance to go there if offered.

I honestly think that Arsenal would be better off as a team anyway spending 20 odd mil on say Kranjcar and Marcos Senna as replacements for Hleb and Flamini then spending 80 mil+ on Messi and Gerrard.

Damn right! Lets hope for their sake that Senna takes corners better than Ayrton....
