Sasha Vs. Diggers - Who's better?
I've just seen Triplow's post in the Involver 2 thread and it got me thinking. You've got 2 of the biggest DJ's in the world but both very individual in their own right.

Sasha is huge no doubt about it. He's known by pretty much everyone who considers themselves as a dance music fan. But how much of that is hype.

Digweed on the other hand is a lot subdued. He's never been one to shout about himself and create massive amounts of publicity around him. He just lets hits music do the talking for him

Alongside DJ'ing Sasha's gone off and made his own agency (Excession), an artist album and a string of EPs where as Digweed has behind him one of the biggest nights ever, Bedrock Records and a string of releases of his own. 'Heaven Scent' is one of my favourite tracks ever, but then so is 'Expander'!

They both have the same thought processes when it comes to set building. Layering of sounds and building on emotions. I don't think there's anyone in the world who can blend EQ's as well as Digweed. Smooth mixing is certainly his forte. But then Sasha's gone off with Ableton and started reediting and remixing in his live sets (to an extent).

So after all that i'm still no closer to making a decision as to who is better!

Any thoughts?

Just sahsa has moved with the times unlike anyother DJ

Understand the possible point here, and agree that alot of 'famouse' DJ's are like for the their production, then people love them, but really its all the hype, and if there were a random unknown DJ in a bar perhaps people wouldnt stop and think "fuck me thats a good DJ" but I dont belive this is the case with sasha..
If he was in distguise playing secretly in a small crappy bar, I belive he would still make people stop and think! - Thats good!!

Both.. Definalty..

Since I saw him at MoS last Dec.. my opion of Sasha has changed..
I used to respect what he did, how far he's come in the industrie ect.. and like his stuff.. but it didnt really rock my soxs (how I currently think of Diggers) but I found a new apprication for him as a DJ in an 'allround' sense,
ie I belive that technically speaking JZ is the best DJ in the world, but I dont think that he is the best DJ in the world.. if you see what I mean..:)

Yeah i get ya.

I love the darkness that Diggers brings with him as a dj. I think it's so difficult to seperate them. I've seen Sasha @ Fabric twice and they've been 2 of the best sets i've ever seen. But Digweed at Bedrocks birthday in 06 was absolutely incredible. And there have been too many other times to mention where Digweed has blown me away.

In terms of use of technological advances i think Sasha is way behind the likes of Richie Hawtin but he certainly was one of the first to starting giving Ableton plenty of exposure. But then give diggers a Xone 92 and a couple of cdjs and he's as good as any dj in the world. You only have to look at the Circo Loco residents to know you can put together an amazing set with nothing more than a mixer, 2 turntables and a bag of records. So using technology isn't always the be all and end all

I think i'd probably have to go with Digweed just because not only his he a worldwide DJ but for the amazing Bedrock parties and the work he's done with Bedrock records.

Now this I would like to see..!!
Off to the mightly Fabric land on Sat to see Ricardo Villanobos - Cant bloody wait!!

Ps.. I missed most of Diggers set at Bedrock as was glued to some dude called Matt Von Hetrz set in the middle room - Never heard of him B4 but his was one of the best sets I've seen so far this year (Sorry Diggers)

I think my preferance to sasha over diggers is do=wn to the fact that I love techno before anyother genres.. first & foremost..
But thats just me xx

Rumour has it you'll never see it. Sasha was asked by Fabric to do a cd for the Fabric series but he told them he didn't want to do it. So Fabric turned round and said fine, you'll never play at our club again

The second time i saw him there it was 21st May 05, he'd recorded his essential mix at Maida Vale earlier on that day and it got to about 8am and he played this one track. It's a collaboration between William Orbit and Roots Manuva, can't remember the name but it had got to the stage of the night when he was just messing about, making people think that the night is over and then dropping another track. I just remember he must of put a reverb on this one note and just left it there for ages all on it's own and i think it was possibly the loudest bass note i've ever heard!

I too shall be there for that one. Villalobos is doing it for me more than anyone else in the world right now!

Defintely Sasha.

Diggers sometimes bores the hell out me with his long droning build ups. Pitch up the tunes ffs.

Probably prefer Diggers these days, but from 1995-2005, Sasha all the way.

See now i'm thinking about how good Sasha has been again. Involver, Fundacion, the Maida Vale Essential mix, the cdj set i saw him do at Global one year when he opened with an extract from War Of The Worlds.

I suppose Sasha has done more groundbreaking things in terms of DJ'ing but Bedrock was the first club nights i used to go to.

I don't think i'll ever have an answer

Well, the question of who is better is impossible to answer, but how about answering who you would rather see play now.

For example, Digweed and Sasha are both on on consecutive nights at Fabric but you can only afford to go out one night...who do you choose?

Who's supporting? haha

I'd probably have to say Digweed. But then i've not seen Sasha for a good while so might be nice to get back involved with a bit of some of that. I remember when Diggers did Bedrock at Fabric and it just didn't seem the same as when it was at Heaven. The two go hand in hand in my mind

I have alot of respect for both of them and they are true living legends. The last set i heard from Sasha @ The Custard factory a couple of months ago was one of the best sets i've ever heard and the last Diggers set i heard at the end of last year wasn't all that so based on what i've recently heard i'd say sasha.

...but either way, they are both amazing.

I really have to disagree with this comment, i find Sasha boring live and think i would be lolling around waiting for something good to happen not thinking 'wow who is this guy', but each to their own, what gets me is the guys CD's, he never fails to blow me away with them, even the live mix he released Avalon Los Angeles 24/06/06 was awesome, why can't i be at nights when he plays like that.
Saw Diggers last October at the Arches and he was really good but i must be honest again, his warm up DJ did more for me, so much so that i followed the guy into the playroom and watched him play the rest of the night, haven't been lucky enough to see him this year yet but i'll be seeing them both at Live@Loch Lomond in August so i think i'll reserve judgement until then.
If i had to choose at this very moment i'd say Diggers the man has such an air about him when he plays, it's like he's playing in his own front room, so cool and relaxed, but maybe August will change me.

They are both great DJ's in their own right and i like them both for different reasons.
