During the late 80's early 90's a dance music movement swept the Uk. The music played was predominantly acid house. (Which you can still see in the roots of Oldskool music.)
This acid house music we played at events called raves. Illegal gatherings of people who danced through the night in abandoned warehouses or in open air venues (much like the free party scene of today) People who attended raves were ravers. They were not Hardcore as you put it. (They might well have been hardcore fanatics of the underground scene like some one who is a mad fan of something can also be described as a hardcore fan. but its not something that is widely associated with the tag of someone who is a raver)
The music was much slower then and was a complete mix, around the time of 94 / 95 (some say a bit earlier) the music changed, sped up and also took two very different directions. The jungle sound with deeper rolling basslines formed what we now called drum and bass and the more melodic uplifting vocals we now called happy hardcore. Not much has changed since. But with the constant rising standard in production and the cheesy bootlegs and covers all but disappearing, the tag "Happy" was dropped with the feeling that Hardcore was more credable without the Happy tag.

The heavy commercialisation of the scene and hardcore in general has nothing to do with the name, the name was about before the commercialisation as I only see that the commercialisation has come about in the last few years.

what also gets me is when you express an opinion of what you think of cough cough hardcore and the way its going people take it as a personal attack.

I just find it a shame that an arena that used to open up many exciting possibilities for dance music has become so closed off and anal.
