Ooh, good question.

To answer your question, I had to go down to the bookshop and take a look on the bookshelf in the language section and see if there are any textbooks from which I can write down a few keywords in my notebook. Unfortunately, when I got to the train station, I realised that I had misread the timetable and so I had to go to the bus stop.

But then I realised I was talking bullshit.

Not at all - it was actually a very up my street question.

I'm actually much better on the way compounds are pronounced than their grammatical structure though:

1. Compound nouns are usually stressed on the first word, e.g. 'ashtray, 'girlfriend, 'parking meter, skyscraper.

2. However, there are special cases where the stress is on the second noun:

a) where N1 or N2 is a proper noun, e.g. Mornington 'Crescent, Oxford 'Circus, Victoria 'Station

i) but the word Street is an exception, e.g. 'Oxford Street

b) where N2 is MADE OF N1, especially food, e.g. cotton 'dress, brick 'wall, cheese 'sandwich, pork 'pie, orange 'squash

i) however, the words Cake, Juice, Milk and Water are exceptions, e.g. 'chocolate cake, 'orange juice

ii) also if there is an underlying "made of" structure, this is also an exception, e.g. 'ice cube, 'butter mountain

c) If N2 and N1 refer to the same thing, e.g. woman 'writer, twin 'sister

Intuitive, isn't it?
