PSR- The -SUPER- DELUXE- INTERVIEW (By MC D.H.D)
Dj PSR the Super- Deluxe interview.

PSR-DJ

Paul- AKA PSR in so many words is a pioneer to what we do in today’s scene.

I have had the privilege of knowing him since his first early days and involvement within Happy Nation.

He has always had a drive and raw passion for his music. I also didn’t know that he was as well as established within the scene as he actually is.

Today sees PSR spear heading the forefront of Happy Nation’s promotion and radio along side the mighty Mix Man.
PSR hold down a regular Happy Nation Radio show every Friday, from 6.00pm-8.00pm. Toi be very honest about things, I am not that clued up with the whole Hard Dance spectrum, hence my comments about PSR’s position within the scene. He is also responsible for some seriously good remixes and bootlegs within the boink realms.

Absolutely SMASHING up dance floors for around nine years now PSR is claiming his stakes nearer the top every day as he plays a live jump on show for HNTV I would like to start by saying:

PSR your regular Friday Night show has progressed and evolved into ‘Dr Wangs Friday Night Take Away’- this is quite a legendary thing, and also a bit of a house hold name for those in the know! Could you tell us a bit more about this, and how it came about? Also can you deliver us a definition of the word ‘WANG’?

As you may not be aware is that my shows used to be thursday 6-8 and at the time of the change over on HN mixman decided that DJ s that wanted a theme show could so mixman came up with the name DR WANG but my move to friday 6-8 has progressed to friday night take away, and the use friday show as a warm up to the weekend show fitted quiet nice for me. as for the wang it came from DR WANG because of th euse of my elbows whilst i mix the bounce tunes

You are undoubtedly one of the- if not the BEST at ‘boink’mastering. Your sets always full of life and energy. I have seen you countless times take the crowed to new levels of ‘high’how do you formulate your sets? And do you ever pre- plan a set at all?

I never plan what im going to play in my sets , i just go with the flow at events i read the crowd , if they like the tune I play im happy

On this basis what tunes are gracing your vinyl bag and more importantly theses days CD wallet!

Ive got a fair few tunes that havnt left my cd case for a while but here are my top three

1/ Audio headz vs wain johnston - stupid experts

2/ PSR BOOTLEG - Plummet Damaged

3/ CL STUDIO VS 3 AMIGOS - Its my turn

What are your feelings on playing many MP3 down loads now, and as we all sadly know Vinyl is slowly being fazed out... What are your thoughts on all this, and also what is your preferred method of playing out with? Do you find ‘Wanging’ easier on CDJ’s or Technics?

My feelings on MP3 , well you can get so much on download now , there had come a time when i needed to change , i still have loads of vinyl , and do like to play it still ,but the weight of vinyl just kills your back after a while ,
As for wanging cds are some much easier ( lol )

You have been on the scene for a respectable amount of years now. On your shows you have been playing your dub plates which I personally think are very good. You have recently remixed a bootleg of ‘Damage’as a solo effort, as well as producing a nice little stomper with Moat House and Pez Vs Cl Studio, - It’s my Turn. This really caught my ear. And another from the same dastardly trio: Happiness is Happening. Where do you draw influence from, and what inspires to put together such work?

Well it was so nice to get in studio to and finally do a track with the CL Studio guys ( aka Paul F & Kye Shand ) The influence was a team effort , i like tunes that have a big build to a smooth breakdown with some vocals

As for my bootleg of Plummet - damaged , i love this tune thought why not have a go at it myself

Watch this space guys more tunes to come from 3 amigos and cl studio ( these are top lads at the height of there game )

Being in the scene for so long you have moved through musical time, and like us all adapted to changes within the sounds of our music. You also play upfront hardcore sets at certain events. What type of hardcore do own in your play out list?
I remember at Squelcher Nation you and Ampz back to back set worked extremely well. I haven’t heard you play it since. Do you have any more future plans to do any more hardcore sets?

I like upfront hardcore with a trance edge to it

I loved playing BTB with Ampz bounced of each other with tune selection ,

Hope to get booked for some hardcore events very soon now that hardcore demo is done ( please pm me if you want the link djpsr@hotmail.co.uk )

An over view of the scene today: How do you view today’s Hardcore Scene and of course the Hard Dance scene? I sometimes think that there is far too much stigma attached to ravers and ‘Hard Dance clubbers’ being labelled as just this! Being in your position of mainly playing your own style but also being able to play hardcore, and then promote an event which plays both- do you think that there should be more events in the London borough pushing both types of music i.e. Hard Dance & Hardcore?
Happy Nation is one of the only events that I have seen pushing all musical spectrums. How do you view music in London, and would you say it has a good healthy future?

I think that the hard dance / hardcore scene needs to join hands more and put on more events together , there are a fair few nights out there that play both styles at there event , ie Happy Nation , Raindance , and a fair few others but there needs to be more i think and my up and coming nights for unseen talent

I try to change my styles now and then to keep me fresh in the scene , as the scene always changes all the time you have to keep up with the pace it moves

Going back to playing out, and Happy Nation- do you have any ‘favourite’ Dj’s that you like to work with?
(Don’t be shy- we know Greg Peaks is reading this)*wink wink

Sorry to say i never have a favourite , but i do like to play btb with other djs ( but we all prefer to play on our own )
But if i could choose a top 5 BTB it would be

1/ Darren grant ( top talent )
2/ Duracell ( Nice bloke + skilled )
3/ Moathouse ( we work very good as a BTB team )
4/ Greg Peaks ( Wang Off )
5/ Mixman ( because he is the gaffa of course )

I try and do my bit for the up and coming crew. What advice can you give for any up and coming Dj/ Producer? After all it is still a little tough out there. Also do you think enough is being done to expose and promote new talent like this?

Stay focused on what you want to get out of your dj career , but there are another 1000 djs waiting in the line to get where you are , and i can tell you it is hard work to keep staying fresh in the scene and get noitched , ( we need more up and coming dj night )

Where do you see you’re self in say four years time, along with the ever evolving scene?

Hopefully back running my own night , and still be getting booked hopefully by some of the bigger names in the scene

PSR it’s been all mighty. On the eve of Happy Nation 26... I can only say I have mentally run out of questions! So if you would be so good to offer the good people s few final words and final thought to end the in-depth interview you have kindly given!!

Big shout out goes to the gaffa MIXMAN , also big shout out to the DHD for the interview also big shout to the Happy Nation raver thanks for the support over the last year and il see you all at the front of the dance floor

PSR once again, many thanks for your help support, words and above all your time today.

I have known PSR for a little over 2years now, god its gone quick. He used to play funky house when he first started at HN, but quikly adapted his style to hard trance, trance and boink!! If im honest if it hadnt been for Paul, i would never have got into Boink!!
He is a taleneted DJ, can listen and take on board constructive criticism and always delivers a good set!
This lad willc ertainly go far. Not only is he a good dj, he is also a very good friend!
