Slightly delayed week 14 Ibiza blog inc. Circo Loco @ DC10 Re-Opening review!
Last week I left you with the joyous news that the return of DC10 was immanent and that Circo Loco will back on the clubbing scene on Monday 18th August. Well their re-opening party was nothing short of amazing, and one that I have to credit as being A) The best party of the summer so far, B) One of the best parties I have ever been too EVER, and C) Musically, one of the most inspirational for me as a DJ.

The excitement had been building up all day, not to mention the many days leading up to it. We arrived at the venue around 18:30, the festival-like parade of people walking from the car park to the entrance added to our high-spirited moods as everyone was so looking forward to this shindig. As expected, the terrace was already looking busy with the main room comfortably full. A change of set times meant that Clive Henry and Andrew Grant opened the terrace, with Dan Ghenacia laying down the techno beats in the main room for a good 3 hours. As mentioned in previous weeks, I have noticed a huge change in music on the island over the years, with this years sound being more tougher material however I wasn’t expecting the beef-fest that was in store for us that night. Henry and Grant played some brilliant music that was both harder than there usual sound and excellent for starting up this epic event. This really set the pace for the night as it only got grittier and heavier from there on out! Freak N Chic’s label manager, Dan Ghenacia retained a cool groove to all of his tracks but still packed out punches to rival Tyson! Thoughts around whether this was a night going to peak to earlier did cross my mind, but I was easily forgotten about when looking at the excitement on everyone’s faces and the sheer madness of the atmosphere, its easy to understand how the Circo Loco name came about, this really was a Crazy Circus! As minutes were going by, more and more techno loons piled into the venue all as bubbly as one another, even though by 20:00 it was packed it didn’t seem to bother us…the riot was in full swing! Tania Vulcano took to the decks on the terrace, usually I find her pretty tame and a tad boring however she perfectly continued the flow and pace of the previous set and took the music to the next level working the clubbers into a frenzy. It was good to see her side step her usual sound for a moment and drop Todd Terry’s house classic “Can You Feel It”. The claxon in the crowd was one of many noises coming from the dancefloor; everyone was either shouting, cheering or both with all dancing like this is there last night out. My thoughts by the end of this set is that it just couldn’t get any better, that Luciano’s usual bleep-fest would bring the atmosphere down potentially, however the Peruvian mustache-fiend proved me wrong and turned the club into what can only be described as a Brazilian street Mardi Gras like carnival! Apart from adding the tribal elements to the night he upped the tempo and rolled out the techno like a runaway mine train! Heat and over filling of the club lead to our departure to the outside area to cool off, the two arenas were boiling so sitting outside was a breath of fresh air in more than one way. When we attempted to go back inside the entrances doubled up as exits meaning there were hundreds of people blocking them up. To go from the main room to the terrace almost reminded me of the current you get in the ocean, you were taken in there by the bodies scrambling to get inside – not by your legs. It got to the point an hour before the end where we decided to call it quits on the night and head home with unforgettable memories and sweaty vests.

The following night saw yet another trip to Space for Carl Cox and Friends, and the evenings main headliner….the birthday boy and Spain’s finest – Cristian Varela. Sam and I had been waiting for this night since it was announced in May, I was not disappointed however Sam wasn’t overly keen on his set. Several tracks played I could be found going crazy to as I had them already, a tilt of the cap for playing “Hows your evening so far?” followed by the original version of “French Kiss”. A short trip over to the terrace saw Josh Wink take to the decks for a 3 hour set which was absolutely brilliant however some of his mixing was a bit out. His use of the FX module was the highlight by using looped vocal samples, extending the records breakdowns and increasing the intensity of the build ups, however if he spent as much time queing up his records as he did with trickery then the set would have been flawless. His deep house meets groovy minimal was very unique and pleased us all that went along for the journey.

Thursday was my last day at work and with it I did bugger all, the constant reoccurring response I got from fellow workers that I am going to have a great time having four weeks off got me even more excited. A meal on Friday night at Kasbah was a pleasant one, having the ocean next to Sam and I while the sun was going down made a huge change to the cheaper venues we pick such as Fatso’s and The Cat And Parrott. A night on the piss down the west end was to follow with Amo and mates of ours from back at home Daley, Antonio, Craig and Jessy which turned a bit crazy at points involving us all singing along to the joyous soundtrack Funky Flares had to offer. A short trip over to Wonderland at Eden was a pointless one however Groove Armada were playing some brilliant tech house.

The reason this weeks blog has gone online so late is because Saturday was the annual “Shit Party”, which is a workers gig at the abandon zoo just outside of San Antonio. Everyone had to wear fancy dress which saw me sport an old school basketball outfit complete with afro wig, Sam opted for a Hawaiian hoola girl outfit and Amo complete blacked up his whole body in black face paint and an afro wig to boot which got some very very interesting looks from anyone we saw on route to the event that was naturally darker skinned anyway. The party attracted 2000+ people and overall was a great laugh however the music was pretty crap until Sean Hughes and Jamie Gittins took to the decks. If it wasn’t a fancy dress party I reckon it would have been a bit naff overall, the oufits put everyone in a good mood and made everyone laugh from start to finish. The “one more record” was Queen’s uber-anthem “Don’t Stop Me Now” which was amazing, everyone joined in and sang along which for me was the highlight. An after party at Eden was to follow however that was ok, but not great. Infected Mushroom was in the main room who I was dying to see however we was not allowed in free to this like usual and I wasn’t willing to pay in. The party continued round our place till the early hours of the morning before eventually passing out through exhaustion.

The following weeks party shecdule involves DC10 on Monday, I have been asked to play for Filthy Gorgeous on Tuesday featuring Mistress Da Funk, before this though we will be warming up at Ibiza Rocks where Soul Wax will be doing there thing featuring 2ManyDJs. I really want to do Meganite on Wednesday to see Marco Bailey and Phil Kieron however money maybe a problem. Wednesday also plays host to our house party which we have re-titled DC9.5 and will go on all afternoon/evening/night. Finally Fatboy Slim and 2ManyDJs will be taking over Manumission on Friday which will be worth the visit. Most importantly however is that my sister will be here mid week, I have three mates from Shrewsbury over on Monday and Sam finally finishes work for good on Tuesday meaning she can start enjoying herself just that little bit more.

hey man, sounds like your having a blast, keep it up!

been at a fairly muddy Creamfields myself on Saturday - saw Luciano & Fatboy Slim both were pretty damn good. as well as Sasha, Prydz, Pendulum, Adam Beyer and Laidback Luke being highlights too. Dubfire didn't turn up though, which I was a bit gutted about as never seen him before and really like some of his tracks.
