Earplugs?
Sorry if this has been asked before, but can anyone recommend some earplugs for use while playing out? Its getting to the point where the ringing is there more than not and i'm starting to get a bit concerned. Only problem is i dont have the cash handy to invest in some top of the range custom fit plugs at the mo, i'm more after some for around 30-50 quid that are going to keep me going until i can splash out a bit more. Also i'd need them by the weekend so a speedy service is important!

Thanks in advance

get those, they're £7 or something. you can somewhere find a discount code as well which makes them £5.99. quick delivery.

you can't wear them while playing but if you wear them the rest of the time you'll only have high volumes for your set so your ears shouldn't receive too much of a battering in that time. you won't find decent in-ear djing plugs for that price, and if you did i wouldn't get them. save up for the elacin er-15s.

you can get some in ear ones for about £70, if you go to the harderfaster.net site in the main forum there is a sticky thread with a link to a site where you can get discounted in ear plugs, they seem quite good.

I wore some ones I got free at santa pod a few years ago when i was playing at the weekend and they did the job perfect...
I think you can get cheap ones from any chemist (well most of them) I dont think id ever bother buying really expensive ones as the cheap ones i used were alot better than I was expecting...

dear twofiveoh,

There are many options open to people who listen to loud music or indeed work in an invironment where they are subjected to loud music. A cheap option would be to buy a pair of silicone earplugs, These can be bought online or at most chemists etc for around £6 a pair.

As a big music fan and raver I am actually currently creating a website to help educate people on the importance of looking after your hearing as well as to sell products to fit ths gap. If you like, please do book my site for future as I intend to put on offer here for people looking to buy ear plugs.

Please note once hearing is actually damaged it is not repairable. A lot of ear plugs these days will not actually spoil the enjoyment of your music as well. So please do take adequate precaution.

Regards. John.

those ones aren't designed for musicians. the frequencies allowed through have a huge cut in the top end, as a result your enjoyment of the music is drastically reduced and would make djing very difficult if as i do you mix predominantly using the hi-hats etc (i started off mixing dnb).

the ones i put earlier are £6/£7, and are perfect for clubbing use, they just can't be worn while djing.

To be fair I didnt keep them in all the way through my set but i wore them before and after and it really made a difference in the morning,

Only a few of the tracks I was playing on saturday had hi-hats so I didnt really notice lol (was playing hardstyle)

But as for keeping my hearing fresh for the set those cheapies made such a difference and i dont think il ever go out again without them... (especially as im only 18 and already have slight tinitus)

you're missing my point lol. the ones i linked to are also the same price, and are designed for musicians - so you get a flat frequency response allowed through at a non-damaging noise level. so you don't get any damage the next day, no ringing or anything else, but you do get to enjoy the music! if it is possible to enjoy hardstyle that is ;o)

splash out for the real deal mate - you won't regret it.

shitty monitors and big rigs can really fuck your ears up even if you're not using them for long.

the elacin/etymotics are the industry standard but i'd recommend the ER9 over the ER15 - not everyone gets on with DJing using the ER15.

not much good for this weekend's gig though. just get a set of the ER20's for before your set - hopefully you'll be able to turn the monitor down then. you should always turn it down or off between mixes anyway - that helps stop the volume creeping up as you get deafer during your set....

nice tip, thanks for that. just a bit worried as this week i'm playing fri and sat so dont want to do too much damage on the fri and leave myself unable to play the second gig

haha thanks dude.

basically just because of the shape of them - the have little bits that stick out too far for most headphones. if you wear them at all other times though, and turn the monitor down between mixes etc you should be fine for your set without them anyway.

as for getting er-9s over the er-15s, i dispute that a 9dB noise reduction is enough for some clubs... djing with any sort of ear plug will take some getting used to anyway. but, it's personal choice, and you can get the 15dB filter separately to turn the er-9s in to the er-15s.

you may be right but some people really struggle with the 15s. best to start low and work up if necessary i think. that's why it's always best to go with the elacin/etymotics so you can change the filters without changing the moulds.

any protection is better than none though obviously.
