Most commonly used focal length
What focal length(s) do you guys use most often in clubs?

I'm looking to come back into spotting after being out of it for a while. I have a 17-70mm zoom (Canon EF-S mount), and from what I can remember, that was fine (apart from not being a constant f/2.8).

But I am trying to remember if it was wide enough - certainly looking at some of other peoples' images, they seem to use wide angle a lot, especially with groups of people close up.

So I have been thinking of getting the Tokina 11-16mm, which seems to be recommended. I just don't know if I really need it.

Generally, on full frame, the common focal lengths are under 35mm
Hellend and I use 5D (Mark 2 and 3) and we use 15mm fisheye and 16-35mm most commonly.

Those on crop sensors tend to use the 8mm fisheye, 10mm (crop fisheye) and the 10-20/22mm lenses.

Anything over 35mm equivalent on full frame has limited use in a club.

I had that lens when I had the 40D. Really sharp. The zoom range is really short though so it may be restricting in a constantly changing club environment. I used predominately the 17-55 in clubs. I prefer it over ultra wide in clubs as standard focal range exhibits less perspective distortions.

Used to just use the 10-20 i try to keep it around 15 side of things as well (less distortion and not too in your face. But like Wrongun im using my 17-55 a lot more.

Ive seen one guy in a club before with a 70-200!!

24-105 f4L for me, but with a bit of 12-24 as well.

Note that Iain is on full frame so that would be equivalent to 15-65.6 and 7.5-15 on cropped sensor.

Thanks for the replies :)

I could do with replacing my 17-70mm as it's f/2.8-4.5, which can be a PITA at times.

Trouble is, I could easily spend a bloody fortune if I'm not careful.

The 11-16mm would also be handy for interior shoots as well (I think I am trying to talk myself into buying it)

It is a very good lens and served me well. Sharp throughout the frame.

Yea it's easy to spend a fortune. Next you'll be going full frame ha ha!

Mines not massively distorted, just enough to make things look funky.
