few production questions
haven't been on here in ages... DSI has been blocked at work :(
but anyways ive been made redundant last week, so thats no excuse now haha

im deciding to really kick start myself with producing now, ive been wantin to for a while, jus havnt had time/money to get it going

some of you will probably remember me asking about Logic / Ableton earlier in the year, and im still no nearer to decidin which to use!!!!
ive had alot of friends tell me that Logic is really powerful, and produces great sounds etc.... but then again ive also had alot of friends tell it its really really really complicated, and should go for Ableton for th ease of use etc

i was jus wonderin... as im only just starting out producin, should I go for the easier Ableton?? or should I go for Logic, as both are roughly the same price

whats everyones thought????

and also.... im upgrading my speakers. Ive currently got Alesis M1 520s... and I love them to bits, the sound is great, the bass is awesome... its just the freq response isnt the best for production, so Im gonna upgrade them aswell
I was thinkin about the Alesis M1 MK2's, after a friend recommended them, but Adam Shaw has recommended the Tapco S8's...... so again, which would everyone say I should go for??? or are there any other alternatives????

muchas grassy ass people :)

How big is ure room your producing in?

I have heard the 520s AND the Tapcos. a mate of mine upgrade his monitor situation a few month ago - they where better - but id say only just.

Best pair of cans id recommend are the KRK Rokit 8s, but they are £££££

Abletons far easier for the begginner to grasp it with - but then having never used,Logic, Im only biased towards ableton.

Hello mate,

Monitors... I'm also not a big fan of the Alesis mk1/2s. They are good value money-wise and have a big sound but for mixing, they turn out pretty bass heavy. I would go Tapco if you're fixed on either of the 2.

Personally however, I wouldn't fly out and buy a set of monitors without listening to them beforehand. Everyone's ears are different, so my advice would be to head out to your nearest computer music retailer with a CD of tracks you know (and love the mixes of), set a budget and see which suit your preference.

Sequencer-wise, if your attraction to Ableton is ease of use, then I would go for Logic as it's an equally good piece of software for starting out (very simple with plenty of tutorials online) and as Apple's leading DAW, is far more powerful as a pro production tool.

Hope that helps.

P.S. If you are a student (or know one who'll order it for you), Logic 9 is only around £120 ;)

Hello mate, I'm with Alex on this one. I started with Logic and it's very easy to pick up (also thanks to Alex) and it's a very powerful DAW. I've started using Ableton recently for certain things and yes, it's easy to pick up and it's fun but, I still think Logic is the daddy for me.

Monitors, Alesis are not that great. I haven't heard the Tapco myself so cannot comment. I use KRK Rokit 5 and I'm very happy with them. They are not as pricey as the 8's and they'll do very good in a small room!

Good luck!

Logic is sweet... I use this with Reason 4 and works like a dream, I rewire everything into Logic cause I prefer using the outboard dynamics/effects you get with Logic, Reason doesn't support VST/AU and most of my mastering software is AU.

In terms of monitors... I currently use the Alesis M1s but I am going to be upgrading these as soon as possible cause they've served their purpose now. I took a trip to Liverpool a few months back with a friend of mine who was after some new monitors (after using the Alesis ones too) and we listened to a whole bunch of monitors... The original intention was to get there and buy some KRK Rokit 8s but after listening to the Yamaha HS-50s and HS-80s he went for the '80s. They sound amazing and aren't biased either. They're modeled on the legendary NS-10 series too. If you're acoustic environment is limited you'll do good with the HS-50's.

Take a trip to a retailer and have a listen to their range before committing.

P.S. If you are a student (or know one who'll order it for you), Logic 9 is only around £120 ;)

This is good advice, you'll want to check www.mveducation.com for this :)
