Has Australia got it right?
I was emailed this a few months ago. I'd forgot about it, but the whole Question Time debate brought it back to mind.

This is a genuine statement issued by Australian PM Kevin Rudd.

As he got it right? What do you think of his view?

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks..

Separately, Rudd angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques.

Quote:

'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. '

'This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom'

'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society . Learn the language!'

'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools.. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.'

'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.'

'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.'

'If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.'

In Sharia law i think its acceptable to marry up to 3 of your friends wives if they go off to fight a war as part of the whole you should look after them.

Ok, yeah i'm not sure people should be allowed to live under Sharia Law if it's not the common law of the country they are in then.

You'd be jailed for that here.

Tru, or you'd just go abroad get married hten come back over here. Weather or not the marrige would be legally recognised here is another question

However its still a mute point with 4% of the population and not all of them wanting it its quite daft. I mean its more likely that next election the BNP will have a massive swing and take power. That's worth worrying about

Good point.

That's understandable. I was just trying to understand how realistic living under Sharia Law in another country is and what it involves.

muslims dont have a colour, just like jews and gays don't. They are just groups that were targeted at various times of unrest and uncertainty

I meant Islam, not muslim.

....erm, but aren't these "Australians" recent immigrants themselves?

By the same reasoning surely indigenous australians (aborigines etc), who have lived there for tens of thousands of years, could say the same thing to the europeans that moved there only 200 years ago?

If anyone is interested in understanding the difference between Islam and the politicised version, Islamism then I recommend reading The Islamist, by Ed Husain.

It is frightening and reassuring by turns. The distinction couldn't be clearer. Most muslims are moderates, Islamists use political agenda fear and victimhood as a tool to curry favour for their own ends.

Once you understand the difference, you'll see that what Kevin Rudd said was pretty ignorant and probably counter productive. That is his rant probably inflamed things even more that they already were. That doesn't mean you have to pussyfoot around, just choose your words and your targets more carefully.

On sharia law, I don't think it really matters what it consists of, only that the law in the UK is set and upheld by the British govt. and justices system. Whether you think the law is right or wrong there is one law for everyone that lives in the UK.

I wonder how Iraqis and Afghanis feel about having Western Democracy foisted upon them by deadly force?

it means those people want to be able to live under a different legal system to the rest of the country, a legal system founded in the middle east on islamic principles. it would mean they are exempt from standard laws and bound by their own legal framework. it's bollocks basically. if you can't live by the law of the land you chose to be in, fuck off.

Couldn't put it better myself.

If you dont agree with the laws of the country you've moved too, dont live there.
