Great White Shark spotted in Ibiza - No Seriously!!!!
Great White Shark Spotted at Talamanca Beach....

Ok, so it's not clubbing news, but I thought that this might interest some of you!!!

Over the past few weeks several people have alerted the authorities in Ibiza about a large creature swimming in the waters around Formentera. Some people even claimed it to be 12-15 feet in length! Now, it is said that it has been seen in the waters off Talamanca too!! Now normally, I would take stories like this with a whole huge pinch of salt.... but it would seem that these stories are in fact true, and not just a result of the Ibiza rumour mill in over drive in winter again!

The authorities have confirmed that it is a great white shark following reports from fishermen which were extremely detailed. Normally Spain does not see great white sharks - in fact the only part of the mediterranean that they are usually seen in is in Sicily, where the waters are a lot warmer. Speculation is that climate change has brought the fella here.... after all the weather here has been warm and sunny for the last month. (Not that you wanted to hear that!)

All this said, I looked out for him when we were out on a boat on Sunday, and I didn't see him. Damn! That really would have been a good spotting!

xx

This isn't actually that surprising. When you consider over fishing, pollution etc. affecting the Great White's normal food chain and ecosystem, it will have to move to other waters to find food. There have been rumours of Great Whites spotted off the coast of Devon, but no confirmations. The warmer the seas get and the less abundant their food source, the more likely they'll venture to new territory.

Wow, we normally stay at Hostal Talamanca because it's on the beach and we can swim without walking more than 10 feet from the hotel.

I might be giving that a miss this year.

I wouldn't be so sensationalist. You're more likely to be hit by lightning.

Great whites apparently swim in the med to mate, considering the average temperature is warmer than that of the mid atlantic it makes perfect sense as to why have been sharks spotted on the coast off Ibiza. Tourism is the biggest industry in the world, any shark attack in the med. is quickly hushed up jointly by holiday companys as the amount of damage it would do to the industry in the med. especially in the balearics is incredable, anyone who doesnt believe the sighting and carrys on regardless of the warnings is stupid, and deserve all they get. Advisable not to swim and dawn and dusk.

DSI's very own Steve Irwin.
