Don't Stay In - Facebook Connect now live

Well the big day is finally here when Don't Stay In has made it's big jump to it's new login system using Facebook Connect.

This article explains exactly what this all means, how to get 'connected', and puts to rest any of those concerns that you may have on any implications this may have. Put simply, DSI uses facebook Connect now, but we are NOT broadcasting or gaining any further data from you than we ever have done for a standard DSI account You also STILL have the pleasure of complete anonymity from DSI users by using the website if you wish.

Click here for full details and get connected

To continue using the site, the first thing you will need to do is link your accounts together. use the blue Facebook Connect button in the top corner.

Facebook connect will try to connect to a facebook account that you currently use on your PC, and if you are already logged into Facebook, then it will try to use that account. If you have a different facebook account that you want to use, then make sure you have selected it.

Simlilary, the next step is that we will try to link your facebook account to a DSI user account. Simply check that the email address the widget chooses is the correct one that you want to link up. If you want to use a different DSI account, click the button that indicates this and add in the correct DSI name and password, and that's it!!

You can now carry on using DSI in the same way that you alway s have done before.

HELP, I'VE CONNECTED TO THE WRONG ACCOUNT AND MY INBOX / PHOTO'S ARE GONE!!!

OK so this is a common problem that people are having. We're making some changes to make it more obvious what to click on.

Here's how to fix it:

- Click the "connect" button.
- Click "To permanently disconnect your Facebook account, click here.", then the "disconnect" button.
- When the page refreshes, click the "Connect" button.
- Click the "connect with facebook" button and get logged in with Facebook.
- If you get the "Is this you?" panel, double check that this is the right Facebook account, and click "Yes, this is me"
- Click the "Choose another account" button.
- Enter your Don't Stay In login details and click "Link my account".

That's it! You're connected to the correct account. I've made the important steps bold.

(The problem only happens for people who have a different email address for facebook and DSI, and there's an old or dormant DSI account with their Facebook email).

UPDATE 2011-02-10 17:30: Dave just deployed a fix for this that means it shouldn't happen again.
Welcome back!!

HOW TO CONNECT - MAKE SURE WE'RE USING THE RIGHT EMAIL FOR YOU

Click the blue facebook connect button
Click connect with facebook

If you are logged in facebook already, the connector will guess that is the account you want to link in to. If this is correct, allow the permissions.
If this is wrong click 'Not you?' in the bottom of the permissions box.

The next box says 'Is this You'. Just respons accordingly.

Now we are ready to link to your DSI account.

If the email address that the connector has selected is correct, then you can just click 'Use Don't Stay In now'

I have more than 1 account for DSI as I'm an admin. Hence there is more than 1 possible email address that facebook may try to use. Facebook has selected my Hotmail email account to link up though as this is the email I use for my facebook. This is wrong, so I need to select the button that says 'Choose another account' and enter my DSI username and password that I would like to connect with.

You may get the same issue if one of your friends added your email address to our 'friend inviter tool' that we have used for years. When they did this, we would have created you a skeleton DSI account.

I WANT ANONYMITY FROM DSI (I DON'T WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW WHO I REALLY AM. CAN I STILL HAVE THIS?

Yes you can.

NEW USERS

- When you sign up to Don't Stay In, you will have an account that uses your facebook profile name. If you wish to change this to something that keeps your real name private, go to the top of the page and click on 'My Account', then choose 'Update my details' and change your user name.

CURRENT DSI USERS

To put a few minds at rest

- Although we are connecting your facebook account, your posts will still be posted by your DSI nickname, and you will be able to still change that nickname in the usual 'My Account' area.

- People will not be able to track you down through facebook using your Don't Stay In account

PERMISSIONS - WHAT AM I ALLOWING DSI TO DO BY GIVING THEM ACCESS TO MY 'DATA'?

Permission to use your email address

Setting up an account on DSI has always required an email address. So the part that states we may email you is simply for the usual emails that you would receive from DSI... New messages or news items in your groups of interest etc.

If you have these emails switched off on your current account, this will stay as so.

For new users, we need the email address to create the account as this is how we locate you in Facebook. You will be able to choose what emails you receive in the sign up process.

Post to my wall

When you sign up to DSI, we will put a post on your facebook wall saying that you have just signed up to the site. If you don't want this message on your wall, go to facebook and you can remove it with the little blue cross next to the comment.

Nothing else will be posted on your facebook wall for now. When we do finally integrate DSI more into Facebook and use the wall posting facility, we will also have created a widget that allows you to turn this off easily if you do not want content there.

Access my data at any time

Again no different to what data we have already, and this simply allows us to have access to things like your name, DOB etc when you are not using the site.

Access my profile information (birthday, hometown, current city)

Those of you that have an account already, your details will just stay the same as they are. For new members, we need this info to create your profile and these details are no different from what you are expected to share with many other websites.

WHY COULDN'T I HAVE THE OPTION TO USE MY FACEBOOK LOGIN OR MY OLD ONE?

The reason for not allowing you all to continue without using Facebook connect is that we would then have two types of user, a facebook type, and an original DSI member. This would have meant that Dave would have been still building facebook conect as with every new bit of code, it would have to consider two different types of user.

Looking to the future, if we wanted to give you all a new feature Eg. A status update, we would then have to build it for 2 different types of member = twice the work, and a lot more waiting for you guys.

It was either let DSI users stay as they were, and accept that new users couldn't be bothered to sign up and verify email address etc etc just to post a comment... Or we do something that gives us a good chance of getting a new crowd in, and still have the option to keep you lot (if you will support what we're doing). Plus updates only require one load of work.

I DON'T LIKE THE IDEA OF DSI POSTING ANYTHING ON MY FACEBOOK WALL. CAN I STOP THIS?

Sure,

Go to your privacy apps settings page in facebook:

Account > Privacy settings > Apps and Websites (bottom left), choose 'Edit Settings'.

Under Don't Stay In, you should see this:

Take off what you like.

PLEASE NOTE: If you completely disconnect your facebook and DSI, and then reconnect again, then you may have to turn these things off again.

So basically if you choose not to have a Facebook you're not welcome on DSI?

This.
I'm sure people signed up to this website for a reason, and not signed up to FB, or even kept the sites separate. Why take that choice away from people..

I don't think it will bring more people.
I think you'll get a few new users who won't do anything, and lose the older members. And atm, it seems it's all about new users, new users new users, and those who've stayed faithful are getting a bit of a raw deal, and kicked to the curb a little.

I love the way all the Facebook profile pics look shit on dsi as well.

Surely they contravene dsi profile pic rules because the quality of the pic is so poor that you can't actually make out the users face?

You obviously did it right then, but there's been quite a few of us who f*cked up the first bit, and now log in is a massive pain in the arse.

The article with instructions should've been posted BEFORE the change surely? It's common sense that we'd get a warning beforehand.

Jason. Fail.

Lol, I have no problems with mine, I still have all my comments/pictures/name etc etc, I just don't want them linked. There's nothing on my DSI that isn't on my FB, but I have them separate for a reason.

Jason - save me a lot of time please...

Are you going to pay any attention to the request that we do not have to link our facebook and DSI accounts?

Yes or No answer please.

I have no issues about linking the two, but it assumes everyone has only 1 Facebook account, which in reality isn't the case.

The site has to try and keep focusing on new users because it needs to expand it's user base and bring in fresh blood. It's a clubbing website but no one talks about clubbing anymore, so they need to get new users that do, which will in turn bring back the promoters and up incoming revenue

Unfortunately new users are met with a wall of abuse as soon as they step through the door and generally don't bother coming back again

If all the old members live then this won't be a problem anymore but what they gain in new members they lose in old.

Jason. Fail.

When I first did it, it logged me into a very old fake profile with a different email address.

Is this linkage going to be made an option rather than mandatory? I do not want my facebook linked with dsi, i like that they are separate for various reasons. I do not want work collegues etc to be able to find me here and have to start sensoring what i say and when i can be online. It just defeats the purpose of this being a separate website at all if it will only work being linked.

Please dont keep this forced :(

Well, it's going to be a case of out with the old in with the new anyway I suspect so it probably won't be a problem anymore.

It's mandatory.

Yes but it wont take long for the number of new users to reach the number of current old users. And then it wont take the long for the number of new users to surpass the number of old members.

It's a number of current members that have stopped the site from expanding in the past, not a lack of facebook connect options

i didnt c this as a 'clubbing' (excuse me while i throw up) website when i joined. i joined because it was a forum for ravers. ravers and clubbers are not the same in any way.

I dont mind this being an option and if people want it linked they can, that way dsi gets its fb advertising in, but there needs to be an option to not link for those of us that do want to keep things separate.
