Cyberpunk
Does anyone here know how "cyber" arose from ? The origins of the style that seems so predominant in the Harder scene at the moment.

I thought as part of my new modship we should have some discussions about the scene and where the music comes from. It's always good to know your roots.

Thought I would pop along and put my 2 cents in. Haven't posted in a while, but this is a subject that was very close to my heart.

Oh, the humility of that shot above! LOL ;)

I started wearing cyber probably around 1998/99. First came across the term and clothing via Mixmag. Slinky was the first "proper" club that I had been to. Used to go to LeisureLounge in Holborn before then, but no real cyber scene there. First "rave" I went to was Dreamscape in a muddy field in Oxfordshire in the dizzying year of 1990. I was 15 and my brother threw me over the fence. Altern8, amongst others were some of the first dance groups I listened to, along with The Prodigy.

My older brother was in the Army and the time, and if anyone remembers the old NBC suits that Altern8 used to wear, along with dustmasks, then that was what I used to wear.

Moving on a few years, and getting to Slinky, I remember seeing people wearing bright neon clothing, and that mixed with Mixmag, I liked the idea of wearing what the hell you like, preferably making your own and taking on a completely different persona.

I used to run a website called The Messy Surgery around the same time, that was a bit like DSI in as much as people could say what they liked, post pics up. But nothing like the coding that this site has in respect to "spotting" yourself. I used to dress up as Dr. Messy, hence the pic above dressed as a doctor.

I remember seeing pics and interviews with UV Lee, and obviously, through Gatecrasher, it was definatley a Northern thing to start off with.

Slinkykids.com came on the scene, cyberkids galore. And I loved the fact that even if you didn't know anyone when you went to the club, you always ended up chatting to people in "codshit corner", and always with 10-15 phone numbers by the end. Yes, there were indeed such things as mobiles back in the day ;)

The whole aspect of making your own clothing was a big thing. Characters such as UV Tigger, Ralph (still on this site) and Noodles were on the scene and made a big thing about making their own clothes.

I always remember making my way down to Slinky and getting shouts from people in the streets. I guess it helped that a) I was a Physical Training Instructor in the Army b) being a bit older than the rest of them and c) Not really caring that people shouted, but I never really got any drama when I was dressed up. Although I do remember occasions when people dressed in Cyber would get grief, then ask me for help. I think it helped being that bit older/bigger.

So, there's my little story on how I got into Cyber back in the day. I wouldn't wear it now, but only cos I don't want to be one of those people that the youngsters say "He shouldnt be wearing that at HIS age!" LOL. You can take the kid out of cyber, but you cant take the cyber out of the kid!

Great topic btw Jack! :)
