The K2 "In The Know" Sessions @ a secret location in London (UK)
Fri 05 Sep 2008
Nik Spiers
In the last few years Nik has grown to become one of the hottest up and coming DJs on the south east coast. His residencies at nights such as ‘Tonk’ have attracted the eyes of larger labels in London and the homegrown hero has been making the trip to play for nights such as ‘Glowball’ and ‘Nightshift’. As a new DJ to the scene he's of course still finding his feet. We caught up with him and decided to take a look over his rapidly growing DJ career.
Nik has always been into Dance music. Throughout his life he’s been a total believer. From the Prodigy and the Chemical Brothers in his early days, his taste evolved into a more dancefloor centred sound as he discovered the joy of Euphoric Trance in the early 90’s. He was influenced by such greats as Eddie Haliwell, Armin Van Buuren. You wouldn’t be surprised to find out that his favourite tune of all time, the absolutely awesome “Silence” by Delirium, is one of the classics of this era.
Once Nik got hold of his first set of decks he taught himself to mix, “you’ve gotta learn by your own mistakes” he says of the early days of his DJing. His talent was apparent when he learnt the turntable art within just six months and started to score sets in his local area. He became part of a big community of DJs in Hastings who help each other out with records and sets. “I just gave my mix CD to a promoter, we started talking, and I got a set” he explains, remembering that important night “I was as nervous as hell, sort of almost shaking - but I managed to pull it together and play a fantastic set”. A lot of his inspiration comes from listening to his DJ heroes, but he wants to keep both feet on the ground.
