Rob the problem with headphone mixing is it's extremely difficult to pick which track is going faster or slower when correcting.

Hmm Ive never had that problem.

Not all people who enjoy mixing do it for a living. And mixing is supposed to be a fun pass time! So for the enjoyment and satisfaction of a perfect mix, nothing can beat vinyl!

Cdj's were really invented for people who want to take it further and pursue a career, as the music becomes 10 times more cheaper and accessible!

As for people who find enjoyment out of sitting at home 'practicing' on a laptop... well each to their own...

I dont even think laptop djs really even bother doing what we cd/turntable djs do at home for fun ie just turning the music up and avin a mix :o/

They make it sound different Dylan yes, but you'd need your ears checked if you prefer it.

Did i say I preferred it?

And studio engineers also spend FORTUNES on valve pre-amps to get that warm sound that only the older technically more inferior equipment can give you... Why use a software emulation when you can still use the actual gear to get you there?
I never said I preferred the sound of vinyl, but im hanging onto my 1210's because ive got loads of old records and id rather get to grips with them before I even think about arsing around on CDJ's. Id love some CDJ1000's and have already got about 11 gigs of MP3's ready to throw on them.... But all in good time my friend.

Dont really know to much about cdj's but i do think that they have made mixing alot easier...everyones gonna be a dj soon!! what will be the point in that!

Isnt beat matching the hardest thing to master?...people practise for ages and ages to try and beat match...I will never forget the fist time I mixed two tracks together flawlesly...I was like oh yeah i can mix!!....Whats the point of being able to do it all digitally?....wheres the skill in that?

DJ ing is a performing art and i think CDJ's have taken half of that entertainment value away!

Vinyl all the way for me im afraid!!

Tbh, the last Electrotonic we did @ Heist I had to mix entirely in my headphones and it was a fucking nightmare! But that said, the sound system @ the venue was also very poor.

CDJs are the way forward im affraid for many reasons...

1) Viynl is too expensive and CD quality is alot better
2) CDs can easily be reburnt and carried around
3) CDJs allow so much more creativity - look @ Eddie Haliwell
4) 90% of DJs use CDs now, with many already moving on to computer/laptops i.e. PVD, J00F
5) beatmatching may be easier on CDJs, but that is a minute part of DJs - tune selection, set structure, working a crowd, EQing/technique, performance

Im sure theres more but im still quite battered from Turnmills last night haha

It is to a certain degree, but could the average clubber tell (visually) whether a DJ was playing off Vinyl, or CD? Probably not. I think DJ'ing is about providing a clubber with the best possible aural experience, using the best equipment for the job will help you do that.

Isnt beat matching the hardest thing to master?

Its actually probably the easiest. Knowing when to drop the mix in, EQ'ing and knowing which track compliments another are probably harder skills to ecquire.

100% agreed! Beatmatching is such a small part, although a very important skill. The actual mixing i.e. ensuring no key clashes, EQing etc is what seperates a good DJ and a shit DJ

Using CDs undoubtedly can add a huge new dimension to a set that is totally impossible with vinyl, and anything that does that is good in my book. Its now no longer enough to be a good DJ, you have to have something which sets you apart from the rest. Be it loops, samples, scratching (but if you're not fucking excellent, dont bother!) and clever use of the EQ and FX... Watching someone like James Zabiela at work blows me away every time, and its wicked to see people trying out new tricks to better themselves, rather than saying "Im a purist, sticking to vinyl and thats it". Although if thats how someone wants to be and theyre still smashing dancefloors all over the place, rock on!

I find knowing what track compliments each other pretty easy....... it was beat matching that took me ages and ages to get right still havent mastered it!! but i suppose i am an amature and your all profesiionals so havent really got a clue bout all the technical stuff you guys have to go through..

Im sure theres more but im still quite battered from Turnmills last night

Haha!!...so steve babe did you have fun shopping with your mum in next?.....cant believe you done that today with no sleep from last night you nut nut!!

Does sound good babe!...the only thing about venturiin out of town to get your weekly club fix, is that when you come out of the club your miles away from home, its usually daylight and you have to get public transport home!!! urrgghh thats what puts me off!!...nothing worse than sitting in a mini skirt with smudged makeup, eyes wide as an owls paranoid to F**k and having to sit next to 'normal' people in suits on their way to work... while they look you up and down like you some kind of weirdo!!!

Thats what I hate!!...maybe next time I could take it easy and just drive up there..what ya reckon...how long does it take by car?

Well me and Mike drove up, so if we do it again just jump in with us! Haha you can pass out in the back on way home, although i strongly advise bringing some dark sunglasses for when you leave the club @ 7:30am, oh and a stick to fight off the damn taxi drivers...

"minicub...........you want taxi.............i give you special price............"
