If Urquell Pilsner made clubs.....
Wandering around the lazy streets of Prague's old town , we happened to stumble upon the Roxy. It was a club we'd heard of through Czech friends and also came recommended in our trusty Time Out guide.

Vaguely disappointed to see we'd missed the Stanton Warriors the night before (let's face it, they don't always deliver), we were pleased to find that Danny Howells was playing that night. It was a good excuse to avoid the stag nights taking place elsewhere in the town.

The club cost 280Kc to get in - about £7 - the promised 'before midnight' reduction didn't materialise, or perhaps we'd just failed to understand how it worked.

There were no queues and no searches. Downstairs, we saw someone using a pair of scissors to carefully cut some thing greenish in colour up. In London, the scissors might have worried me, but not here.

Drinks were pretty cheap, about 60p for a bottle of water - well, we weren't in Ibiza after all. A vodka and orange and a red bull came to about £3.50.

The club itself is pretty jaded, but if you like your clubbing unpretentious, as we do, then it's an excellent space. Loads of seating round the back for which we were grateful - we'd walked a long way that day. I'd heard there were 4 floors of clubbing, but we only found 2 rooms of music, the main room which is like (and probably is) an old cinema, with a balcony over it and a the bar which I shall call the polar bear room, because its main inhabitant was a huge plastic polar bear.

If the Polar bear room was meant to be a chill out space then it failed; the whole club was hot , hot, hot! The best place to dance is at the front of the main room, to the right of the stage - there was a smoke machine there when we went in and a nice cool draught coming from somewhere.

The warm-up DJ had his moments, but also played some too vocal tracks which would have emptied the dance floor in the UK.

Danny Howells appeared at 1am......and rocked. The mostly Czech crowd loved it. They were a happy bunch - a guy in a yellow shirt was really "'avin it" but without being annoying or bumping into anyone. I fear for the Czech girls' tiny figures - with the invasion of Macdonalds et al, but they seem to be coping so far.

Danny played an excellent set, nice 'n techy without getting too dark.

The sound system in the club isn't perfect - it's fuzzy round the edges and barely audible during the breakdowns, but a damn good evening can be had - I'd recommend it.

And thank you for the add Dave, its always good to hear about overseas clubbing and especially when it involves the Howellsmeister.
I was actually going to attend this club a few years back when i was in pargue but some how got talked into going to a different one that very messy night (i forget the name at the moment).
Anyway at least i know it'll be worth the visit on my next trip out there.

Yeah, I liked it a lot - nice vibe and people. Soundsystem was a little crappy and it wasn't the busiest night in the world but people were up for it and way low on pretension.
