Cyberfunk was launched by DJ Quest back in 2001 with one aim in mind: Introducing new sounds and styles to the breaks scene whilst maintaining the true funk of the genre. Right from the word go Quest has pushed the Cyberfunk label into new directions with every release. So as the time approaches for the label’s 30th release, it seems only fitting that Quest embarks on a fresh style to show off his outstanding production skills and that he calls on the remix powers of none-other than Si Begg!
From his Cabbageboy, Bigfoot and Buckfunk 3000 aliases to S.I.Futures and his Noodles pet projects, Si Begg has continued to side step musical complacency and defy categorisation. While others seem to be digging up the past and furrowing the same path, Begg seems to be acknowledging its existence with the flick of a sub-bass detonator, always looking for a new direction.
Combining the pioneering sounds of DJ Quest and Si Begg is quite simply a recipe for success!
We kick off the A-side with the Si Begg remix of DJ Quest’s ‘Sedated’. The track immediately launches into a dark and glitchy beat with the first hints of a nose-bleed inducing bassline. Once the track kicks in, its strongly advised that small children and animals be locked away as Begg unleashes a torrent of hefty beats and futuristic industrial sounds. The bassline and build up of this track will seriously destroy a dancefloor with the deepest bass vibrations known to man. This track is not for the faint hearted but its appeal spreads out to any breaks fan.
DJ Quest’s original on the AA immediately launches into a more sinister and ambient vibe. The track builds gradually to the point where you almost need to turn the light on for fear of a surprise attack! The beats on the original are serious rollers and with some of the tightest drum kicks and snares you will hear this year, its clear to see that DJ Quest’s production skills are shining. The original would fit best in a dark and grimy dancefloor with a sound system capable of taking on some serious bass.
For all the trainspotters out there wanting to know the origin of the rather futuristic, eerie and sterile vocal sample look no further than George Lucas’ 1971 Sci-Fi flick ‘THX1138’. Set in the 25th century, the film centres around a man and a woman who rebel against their rigidly controlled society… now if only Si Begg grew breasts and donned a dress we would have the musical re-enactment ready and rolling!
