Dear Dave - Tattoo
Dear Dave,

Tomorrow's my birthday and to mark the occasion I'm thinking of finally getting my first tattoo. I've spent years trying psyching myself to getting one and figuring out what I want to get, and now I need to find somewhere reputable to get it done.

Can you recommend a good salon to go to? I'm going to be in London to get it and don't mind how much it costs so paying over the odds isn't a problem as long as it's done well.

Also, I plan to go to Ibiza in months time - will it be healed fully and, do you know of any other tips to help it heal as being Irish I have stupidly sensitive skin?

a fucking great black panther on his arm and shoulder, complete with green jungle and red bits around it. all in colour. wanker.

My brother has one of those. Without the jungle. Looks like it's climbing up his back with the blood scratchmarks.

I was thinking about getting Mike Tyson on one arse cheek, and Lennox Lewis on the other.

Because no cunt will get in the ring between them.

Haven't watched a lot of London Ink, seen most of Miami and LA Ink though.

It's created an obsession for Kat Von D- I think she's stunning.

Had my first tattoo 2 weeks ago, and my second yesterday, and my third one is hopefully on Monday. That's how they get you.

The shooting star on my wrist didn't really hurt. Like a cat scratching.

Yesterday I had 'to the moon and back' in Arabic from the top of my spine to my bra strap. It's from Oscar's favourite book, and I always say to him 'I love you to the moon and back' so it's personal, and I like that. It was quite painful as it got to the top, and as there are so many nerve endings on the spine, it kind of shot down into my hands which was weird, but I really love it.

I was told to wash mine with an anti bacterial soap when I got home.Pat dry with kitchen towel, thenI use Bepanthem nappy cream as and when. It feels a bit like sunburn that's been slapped after.

Good luck Bex!

Oh I forgot to say, ALWAYS get any foreign script checked as many times as possible. On the way to the tattoist, I took my printed script into a restaurant where the staff speak arabic, and what I was about to have etched down my spine actually read 'The more swill the pigs eat, the fatter they get'. I got 9 different arabs to confirm it was right before having it done. Thank fuck for that!

Yeah something like that happened to my mate when she got a chinese symbol on her lower back. I once heard a story on the net that a guy went into a chinese restaurant so they could spell his name out for him and they gave him the symbols for coca-cola instead! Hopefully the restaurant you went to was nicer! haha

I've been warned about that, and alot of mine is going to be on my actual spine so I'm bracing myself! The wrists I've been told don't hurt too much so I think I'll get them first...

You'll have to post some pics when they're healed. What is it you are getting on Monday and where? Seems like they are as addictive as I've been told if you 're getting three in the space of a month! Have you been wanting to get them for a while and now just taken the plunge?

My tattoist said that alot of the time when people think they have 'peace' or 'luck' it says 'fuck' or 'cunt'.

Hopefully the restaurant you went to was nicer! haha

I went into two more kebab places and showed them the script and they read it back and it was correct. I really didn't want to fuck that up!

It's no where near as bad as you think it is. Towards the top I did some controlled breathing as it was uncomfortable. I think when you're inked on your spine, it's more the thought of it then the actual pain.

The wrists I've been told don't hurt too much so I think I'll get them first...

It was fine. I could've had that done all day.

What is it you are getting on Monday and where?

Similar to this, but only one foot:

I have been working up to getting a tattoo for about 17 yrs!!!

I think that looks absolutely ridiculous.

Not everyone's cuppa tea I guess - I know so many people that think she's gorgeous.

I'm just into the whole alternative look, like Suicide Girls. I can see myself becoming a milder version of Kat in a few years down the line after a few tatts, piercings, would love to pose for SG actually.

I have 7 and I want more... The most painful one was on my back inbetween my shoulderblades.. I take my iPod in and listen to that to take my mind off the sound, so it kinda takes the pain away as well..

To heal mine, I was told to keep the bandage thing they put on it, for two hours, and then vaseline it every time it got dry, and NOT TO SCRATCH IT.

All faded and blending in to each other because they were fairly old.

Tattooing techniques have really evolved over the years though and the needles used now are a lot thinner than they where back then, and there have been improvements to the ink, so blending isn't as bad as it was. As for fading, colours are bad for that so I am staying away from colour - except red, which can easily be gone over again if it needs it in a few years time. Tattoos are like anything - they need maintainance and lots of aftercare so they last and look their best.

All tattoos will fade and blend eventually, because of the skin losing elasticity, and not being able to generate new skin cells as well etc.

Hopefully, mine are in places, where the skin won't lose tooo much elasticity and remain quite taught.
