DJDownload.com goes into administration
XI
"Dear Label Partner

It is with great regret that we have to inform you that DJdownload Limited has been placed into administration by the Directors of the company effective today.

The Directors have worked extremely hard over the past few months to try and save the company: overheads were reduced and attempts to increase revenues were made but ongoing efforts to raise further finance were unsuccessful. Despite their best efforts the company was not able to continue to trade.

We would like to thank you for your support and business over the years and we wish you all the best in the future."

You used to hear about record shops closing because everyone was using download sites, but now it even appears the download sites are suffering. They were always playing second fiddle to Beatport, is there room for competitors? Beatport has pretty much everything i want to find on there, except the odd rare bits but it's pretty much covered the house, techno and minimal sectors. I always saw DJDownload as the more electro house side of things and my use of the site died with my interest in Electro house many years ago

Yeah that is the main reason i stopped using it, they seemed to concetrate on Electro rather thanthe musical styles I liked to play.

Also the interface comapred to Beatport was far inferior

its a shame because its where I started downloading from, but I agree it was neither specialist enough to grab me, nor did it have beatports selection. Shame that unlike a real record shop they dont have loads of stock to get rid of cheaply when they close.

I always loved that site. It seemed to work much better for me than beatport. I liked the way it worked and the needle drop player was a brilliant tool, much better than a selected 30 second preview you get on most sites. Its a real shame that its going.

That is a big shame! i use the site every now and then, but i find the stuff they have on there a little more commercial? however i did find some big tracks on there though! That's a massive shame they have gone!

As "expensive" as Beatport is compared to the others, it is by a long mile the best. I've purchased probably about 20 tunes from DJ download. But they never seem to have everything I want. I'd rather pay an extra £5 a month and shop from one place (Beatport). Juno has done well purely because it still sells vinyl, otherwise I'd think they'd be in trouble too.

Never used it because it didn't have any of the music I wanted, But then I don't really like beat port either.... Pretty much just use Trackitdown.

Always seemed more expensive than beatport with less selection when I went on there. It didn't seem that good & I'm not that bother its gone.

Gutted - I found DJ Download far superior to Beatport and used them for 90% of my downloads.

The two main things I liked was the free download tokens and the ID3 tags that come with the MP3's alas now I'll have to use Traxsource more and reluctantly go to Beatport and then spend hours editing the tags.......bumholio.

Good luck to the DJ Download team anyway, they were going in the right way in my opinion and other sites could have learn't a lot from them :-(

This is quite worrying though....I don't personally like it when 1 company dominates in any industry, it normally means the punters lose out. Big fat shame that!

Looks like they've had a last minute reprieve from Juno

Online music store DJ Download have been placed into administration by the company's directors, although rivals Juno will continue to keep the website afloat.

In a frenzied 24 hours for online music retailer DJ Download, the formerly Ministry Of Sound part-owned store announced that they would enter into administration via an e-mail statement (below), before key competitor Juno stepped in to effectively save them.

"It is with great regret that we have to inform you that DJdownload Limited has been placed into administration by the Directors of the company effective today," read the statement from the company's founder Justin Pearse. "The Directors have worked extremely hard over the past few months to try and save the company: overheads were reduced and attempts to increase revenues were made but ongoing efforts to raise further finance were unsuccessful. Despite their best efforts the company was not able to continue to trade. We would like to thank you for your support and business over the years and we wish you all the best in the future."

Under the newly agreed arrangement, the administrators will still be called in, with the website continuing to trade via Juno's content and administrative guidance. The front-end experience, however, will remain the same, with Juno taking care of all back-end operations.

"DJ Download is a pioneer in digital music and a key player in the dance music business", said Juno founder Richard Atherton. "We believe that with the combined strength of the Juno and DJdownload brands, we can make the download market more competitive and improve customer choice."

I think it's just the way beatport is set out, it is so easy to use! but there were things i liked about DJ Download like the needle drop function.

What do you lot like so much about beatport?

90% of my tunes i buy on vinyl but a couple of days before a gig i'll have a look on beatport to see if there's anything i'd want before the gig. The best feature for me is that it tells you which labels and artists have released new material in the last 7 days. Brilliant function

Yeah i agree with that, it makes searching for tracks a lot quicker. I find on Beatport though that there is so much you have to go through to find stuff you actually like, unless you just rely on the feature you said about.

That's why i don't bother. I only use labels and artists i know on beatport. All the other stuff i get from specialist vinyl shops
