How about naming some great DJ's/examples of sets/moments where people have really mixed things up and surprised us with variety of choons played?

Well back in the early days a lot of dj's used to mix house, techno and rave all in one set, it's another reason why i love the oldskool so much, as you hardly ever see it anymore and you also used to see a lot of dj's doing b2b sets that you would never see now, for example: Clarke and Bryan Gee (dreamscape i think) now Clarke is a gabba dj and Bryan Gee a dnb dj and they would never do it now, you'd be very lucky to see them both playing at the same event these days.

if nights are multi genre then promoters need to arrange the different djs like a dj set and keep it flowing as i have played and been to so many nights where they have got line up completely wrong resulting in the dance floor energy being killed all the time because dj's being placed in wrong order

Good point fish, if you are going to have more than one genre in one room, always make sure the more mellow stuff is on earlier in the night, always nice to have a build up in a room i think.

I got some old Spiral Tribe mixes on my computer, they mix acid into funky into just plain old techno but it works.

Yeah i know a couple of them guys, Aztek (on dsi) and Inca, one of my good mates bro's, if you didn't know who they was back in the day, you didn't know good free party dj's.

If I'm going to a minimal night, I want to hear minimal, If I'm going to a tech house night, I want to hear tech house....

If a room plays different genres throughout the night, I dont think it gets the chance to build up the right atmosphere that you can only get 1am onwards.

I remember one night, I was just getting into the swing of things, pills were kicking in, just started getting a rythym with the dancing and bang, the next dj plays a fucking wanky electro set and pretty much ruined the whole night.

Its all about the random mix up of dnb, dubstep or fidget usually all in one room in Bristol.

I'd like to see more Drum and Bass at hardcore raves too, it quite clearly wouldn't work the other way round though.

agreed on all counts!

One of the things I love about fidget is the mix mash of genres all being thrown into the mix.

When hardcore lost it's breakbeat, it lost me too.

I'm going to dig out my Dreamscape 21 box set when I got home tonight to hear the Hixxy remix again.

Hardcore, DnB, Fidget are names that hold no interest for me. I've been to DnB events at Fabric in the past, popped into the odd dnb tent at Global and Homelands for an hour or so. They were good fun but i want something a bit more cultured when i go clubbing these days. Heard some fidget house at Sonar this summer. A guy called Don Rimini went on after Erol Alkan and was just terrible. Fidget is not for me.

I like the skulldisco styled dubstep. Slower, more thoughtful with higher production values than the more in your face dnb, grime styled dubstep. We had a dubstep room at an event we did a couple of years ago with Shackleton and Appleblim which was incredible.

A perfect night's progression for me would start of with some Deep house grooves to get warmed up. Move through tech house and minimal, peak with some techno, then go darker to finish with a mixture of dub techno and real twisted minimal. Mainly most Saturdays at Fabric that happens and i go home a very happy man!

Yeah it lost a lot of it's followers when this happened, i love breakbeat core big time, don't get me wrong i love some of the newer stuff to, but it was such a big change and very quick too, that a lot of people could not handle it.

I depends which genres are put together if they work together multi genre is great, Like I dunno Dirty House, Electro and Trance, But if they clearly don't work together Like Hardhouse and DnB for instance then it's just no good.

It's all about a steady transition rather than jumping between genres. That's the skill. A club night should be an 8 hour journey, not a collection of stories thrown together under one roof
