World music?
World music?

Probably a major category - if we have a few "region specific" genres...

correct me if i'm wrong but isn't world music just a way of describing like native/folk music from all over the world. for example Womad festival is a world music festival where you can hear all sorts of genres of music from all over the planet!

I cant imagine many people on here listening to it but i listen to Thai, Cambodian, Chinese, Japenese traditional and modern music, some dance based some not.
Havnt you already mentioned a catergory for Asian musics though, what countrys do pull into this class, are you just thinking of Styles like Bhangra etc ?

"World music" is a very broad genre but generally I would define it as Native "Popular" music. I joined this group for this very reason! I couldn't find it...

"World Beats" perhaps?
Which defines it as modern/contemporary world music rather than classical world music
This would include popular modern styles such as :
Afrobeat
Bhangra
Arabic pop
Flamenco
Turkish Pop
Balkan Beats
Modern Bellydance
J-Pop
Eurobeat

and then have a catagory for "traditional world Music"

Since there are so many styles and genres in every country, It is far easier to have "world music'
to describe the above as a catagory

There are so many popular artists that fuse these styles into their music and they are becoming more and more popular within western styles, so I think they should definitely be included here.

we definetly need a world music category. More and more nights/promoteres are combining different genre with Afrobeats, Asian or easter European sounds. All my events are a mix of Urban/World music.

World beats works well in my opinion.

Genre i would add to the list above

Soca
Zouk
Kizomba
Kuduro
Kwaito
Rai
MPB (Music Popular Brazileira)
Coupe Decale
Soukouss
N'donbolo
Makossa

I'm trying to add a Brazilian club night which plays samba, latin, salsa, that kind of stuff. Would be helpful to have a genre which incorporates some of the world music styles above - the current list is definitely very Anglo-centric, and this doesn't represent what's actually out there.
