i wouldn't think Retro but if you have funk and jazz etc in there maybe it shou;d. Retro could be teh sub genre for big genres that don't really get made anymore but still get played!

you could certainly split jazz into bop, swing, free jazz and stuff, some of which would be retro and some wouldnt by defintion.

having posted in the reggae topic kind of got me thinking about the categorisation thing. becuase i wouldnt put roots reggae under urban but dancehall is certainly a form of reggae but is also considered part of urban music.

i guess its the same when youre figuring out if breakestra or quantic are retro becuase they make funk tracks or not because theyre recording them now.

perhaps whats needed is a move to some kind of genre structure based on sets where genres can be a member of more than one other genre, so dancehall can be under both reggae and urban - ??

i did think of a decent reason in terms of that helping users but thats left my head now.

then you could also have the ability for, say funk nights to be either listed either in retro, or modern, or both. or whatever.

or perhaps just some kind of tree based structure which allows for a more heirarchically based representation with more tiers than the current 2 - ??

or is this just too complicated/beyond the scope of the rejig?

ive kind of come to this having finally got my home pc back after ages and found myself invited to this group and took an interest in some of this so i could just be asking for the impossible here...
