BAILE FUNK
Surely one of for the Alternative Dance category...
Getting more and more popular all the time, although maybe not outside London so much - Diplo and MIA led the way, but plenty of nights around now - e.g. at Guanabara off Drury Lane...

Love the XR2 tune, surely a baile funk anthem?

I can't help but feel it shouldn't be a genre in it's own right though, we're just nit picking now surely!

Yeah - mad horns!

the Diplo Turbo Remix takes it to a whole new level though...

Yeah a lot of people say that, I can't see it myself, heard them in both in Fabric room 1 and the horns do it for me everytime. Bird Flu, although probs not baile - is fucking heavy too.

According to this

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_Funk

Baile Funk is a subset of Brazilian Funk (=Funk Carioca), which already seems to me that it is specific enough. If I put it as "Brazilian Funk" in the suggestion list, is that OK do you think?

I don't think so, the current buzz word is baile funk, that's what is appearing on flyers etc.

OK, I've added it to the provisional list (in a list of subdivisions under Brazilian Funk since it's a subgenre), so at least it's there.

Remember, this list is just a list of ideas for the DSI people to think further about later.

It's a tricky one. I would say that in terms of musical style and the type of people who are into it, Baile Funk is far closer to Electro and Hip-Hop than to anything in the Latin genre (it's essentially Miami Bass with mental horns and men shouting a lot). Brazilian Electro is still Electro.

Also, Funk Carioca, Brazilian Funk and Baile Funk are different terms for the same thing, depending on where you are:

"Funk Carioca means "Funk from Rio" in Brazilian Portuguese, and is also known as Brazilian Funk (which also relates to a 1970's musical style), Favela Funk and, elsewhere in the world, Baile Funk" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_Funk

Given that we are "elsewhere in the world" it is generally known as Baile Funk.

I'd agree it's one for the Alternative Dance section. Like mightyhor say's it stems from Miami Bass, which in essence is a form of Breaks based dance music (and should be on the list too). Although Latin is a fair choice too (why not in both?).

Baile is the name of the dances where the music is played and translates as Ball (Funk Ball) and apparently is frowned upon for being used to describe the music, unfortunately that's what has stuck out side of Brazil.

Kuduro should be put up along side this too. Check out Buraka Som Sistema (widely available on the Tayo Fabric CD) for a heavy example. This stuff comes from Africa via Portugal I believe.

Other tracks worth checking for Baile are MIA - Bucky Don Gun (DJ Marlboro remix), Edu K - Hot Mama and MC Jack E Chocolate - Pavoroty.

I think Baile Funk or Brazilian Funk or Funk Carioca (all those names apply) should be listed in it's own right particularly as I am putting on the first real hardcord Baile Funk with live acts from Brazil
