Linux stuff - help !
Hi guys,

My linux box (RHEL 5) seems to have gotten itself all confuddled about its copy of netstat.

Does anyone have any idea where I can download a replacement of this rather nifty tool (yes, I have googled 'RHEL 5 netstat download' and a few other variants).

I really don't have the time to reinstall the OS on the box, hence why I'd just like to replace a copy of the boogled file.

Many thanks in advance.

hacktux.com might help. Use yum, the package manager to remove and reinstall it. Unlike dpkg, yum doesn't have a force reinstall option.

Thanks for the quick response simmerz.

I just tried running yum, but the system informed me that I need to have a valid subscription. Does this mean I have to pay Redhat (or one of its partners) another four hundred odd quid?

Can't you just build it from source?

I'm no expert when it comes to Linux but probably, as I believe I still have the installation CD's although a pointer to where to start would be greatly appreciated (as I said, I'm no expert when it comes to Linux).

You can get netstat from the RHEL repos as standard plus nonstandard repos.

AFAIK netstat should be available on standard RHEL repos though?

Check you're getting the name right (via rhel website, there are lists of full package names) - sometimes just typing yum install (or whatever it is for yum) netstat won't get you what u want.

Im confuddled as to how it got broken in the first place? It's a core tool :S

here:

docs.redhat.com

docs.redhat.com

joysofprogramming.com

Also, silly question but it has to be asked - you're definitely root right? ;P

& I take it as it's RHEL it's a corporate install?

It's dead easy chicken, u don't need the install cd's or anything, it's a simple case of ftp'ing it from wherever or d/ling from nonstandard repos, make, makinstall - bobs yer uncle

BUT you do need to make sure remnants of the broken tool are removed prior or it'll fuck it up.

I hate RHEL - centos wins every time!

Do I need a valid support subscription for that?

Yes

Again yes, but I let the support subscription expire about 4 years ago (and its not worth it to me to renew it).

Thanks Iain :)

BTW what error do you get when you try to run netstat?

bash: netstat: command not found

(basically, the netstat file in the bin directory is listed as 'unkown type' and when I check its mime type it is listed as application/octet-stream - as opposed to the application/x-executable type of things like mv).

The reason I use RHEL is that is the version used on the server we rent for our hosting, so I have a development one setup in the office to test our stuff on before we embarass our selves by releasing buggy shite.

To be fair, I suspect I'm going to have to reinstall everything at some point anyway as the system has been 'not right' for a while now...

Just trying to use netstat to find out just how 'not right' it is....

TBH if I were you I'd save some money and use centos - we use our 3 centos boxes for exactly the same so we still meet rhel standards for clients for certain products. (though we're predominantly solaris & genpoo) - you'll really find no change in debugging, it's essentially the same platform but free ^_^

Ah. Probably why you can't use the enterprise repos then - try adding some nonstandards/centos repos - or go for iains link on SF

If you cancelled your enterprise subs 4 years ago methinks rehauling ur system so it's back up to speed would more than likely destroy it...again i'd recommend centos!

again i'd recommend centos!

Thanks for the heads up.

If I do end up 'year zeroing' the thing, I'll take your advice and go down the centos route.

Ok, so for reasons I can't fathom I don't seem to be able to get rid of the old netstat file from inside the bin folder.

Trying to do it via the GUI results in sod all happening (best result so far was it simply being hidden).

Trying to do it from the console using the 'rm netstat' command results in-

rm: cannot lstat 'netstat': Input/output error

BTW: I am logged in as root.

Any advice, hints, tips, instructions, pointers, 'lmgtfy links' greatly received.
