Yo bitches
I think I'm ready, do you?

I'm exceptionally critical of my work and I'm continuously looking to improve so any constructive criticism is welcome. Please don't comment on the fact that some of my fisheye images are not cropped, this is a personal style choice and I'm not looking to change it. I remember years ago MooMan took a photo of Lost in London with a glow stick in his mount and it didn't get fp until the dark edges were blended out. I personally like the skater videography look and feel it adds to a photo, for example:

I thought about changing my username before posting this and I will change it if necessary.

Ahoy there!

First things first - the days of total photographic precision are past us. People want to see interesting photos that are good quality and make you want to check out the rest of the gallery and think about going to the next event from that promotion.

Now I think you're doing exactly what I would want a pro-spotter in 2012 to do.. go out lots, take consistently good quality photos, edit them (and in a consistent manner)

So, my two qualifying questions are:

1. are you handing out cards with your spotter code on them? I'm doing this and I'm still spotting 10-20 people per event, and getting new signups too. I need to know that you're promoting the site if you want to represent the site.

2. What are you doing with your flash? Some of your photos, like the one in the thread have excellent flash control, but these look odd:

I do quite like this:

Anyhow, I'd like the rest of those here to offer their thoughts... so, speak up people!

Hi Mike, unfortunately I'm not handing out spotters cards, obviously people ask where the photos will be and I tell them here. Moving forward I will be proactive in engaging new users, don't think I've ordered spotters cards in over 4 years! I will place an order now.

Both those images from Obsession were before I got myself a diffuser, 8mm close up shots without one are always going to be effected.

Please do get spotter cards! If people know who you're are and where your photos are going then it's unlikely to bring new people to the site, but believe me - there are loads of people who genuinely have yet to discover DSI! (seriously!)

As for the diffuser, yeah 13mm or so is too wide for a flash without diffuser, so good work on sorting that out!

Hi Skunk,

Is the address registered on your account up to date?

If so, I'll put some cards in the post for you today. (It takes a bit longer to get them through the normal system)

Cheers

One thing I would mention would making places look busy. When they are not your style of cropping shows that. Also the pictures in your faves are quite dark considering the venues have plenty of colourful light in them.

100% agree with you, I edit the curves on a LCD that has a high luminosity, they look good on my iPhone but when I view them on my pc at work they appear very dark. For me I cant strand washed out blacks, but think I'm going too far the other way in some cases.

Good seeing you on weekend

You too bro!

I don't think it's the editing that is the problem. There is much more ambient light that isn't captured.

Cheers Owian, nice one.

Dom what would you suggest a faster aperture? I'm focusing manually so my f. is normally f/6.3 to accommodative margin for error. I like all subjects to be in focus when taking group shots.

I'm focusing manually

Why are you focusing manually? In my opinion, it's totally unnecessary with a proper flash as it emits a good AF assist beam.

For a couple of reasons, sorry I should have specified this is just when using my 8mm, I always autofocus with my old 17-85mm and the new 24-70mm, it ain't about making life hard for yourself!

Primarily because I trust my ability to judge distances better than my camera (close range only) after lots of trial and error have I adopted manually focusing, I know my own kit very well and believe me it's the best method. To my knowledge the Sigma 8mm f/3.5 is the only AF 8mm fisheye and anyone that has one I would encourage to play about with the MF :)

I don't generally go past F4 for a group of about 4 people. There is no way you will be more accurate in manual though. The AF assist measures exactly. That's what it is there for.
