Club Photographer Pay??
Hi all,

I've recently been offered a job doing photography for a local club, though I don't know If I'm being ripped off by the amount of pay.

It's £6 an hour for approx 4 hours a night. Should I be charging a set rate for the night, say £40? Or should my pay be increased?

What are you on at the moment for your photos? How many pics do you do for it as well? Would be great to hear about your experiences.

Cheers.

Chris.

Hmm, dont know about that, they havn't really got it up and running yet, Paypal wont be on there for some time.

Good idea though, i'll see how they develop, might use them at some point :) Especially as the club needs prints to put on their walls..

Cheers.

Does anyone charge by amount of photo's the venue want to use?

Kind of......personally, I normally set a price for XX photos...or they might approach you saying they want Xnumber of photos for a web site/space and how much would you charge.

What tends to happen in club photography is that you will say take 100/120 photos for £XX and they of course can use all the photos.

On special occasions like new years or event nights where celebs might need to be captured, would you set a higher rate?
I don't think it's unreasonable to charge a higher rate for NYE or something like that. You are working on a night that most people want off, clubs do charge more for entry etc....it will be a more demanding night.....

As for Celebs...no, personally at the moment I want to build my portfolio so any big celeb or pop band/group, I'll take on board at my regular rates, provided that the T&C's are not amazingly different from the norm. I've really had to pay my dues to get into some of these events, and worked several for free, not even being able to publish the photos at first (also, often with Celebs you will have contracts to sign and need to have your photos approved by 3 or 4 different parties) so I don't think there are many who could charge higher prices to photograph celebs when starting out.

Yeah, a set price for the night seems easier to be honest, they want me there for about 4-5 hours as theres a few bands playing each night, they all need to be captured..

Would you say £50 for 4-5 hours is about right?

Yeah, thats fair, I was asked by one of their employees if id charge a higher rate on special occasions, but i'll take on board what the T&C's are now and if they drastically change i'll try and negotiate accordingly.

The celebs might not be as bigger problem as I thought as they've already had their managers agree to let the venue take photo's for their own use.. which is fine by me.. I suppose, if i were to try and use them to sell prints i'd have to speak with the celebs agencies.

Thanks again missvickie, you've been so great with your responses :)

If you were to pass them on as anything other than editorial, you would be wise to get model release forms. And even then, think about what type of reputataion you want as a photographer. I know in my case, the fact that I'm always respectful of the artists (eg no photos backstage or vip) means I get repeat bookings and unlimited access in some venues....had I gone on to sell or take photos when I was not meant to or take tacky shoots, means I would not have the opportunities I do now with the people I want.

If it's a first job for you, regular work and the turnaround time of the photos is not something like 12 hours, and the venue is not a large/main one then it's your starting point. Also if you are just giving the photos over for them to upload to their website, and print some for use in the venue, then I think that's fine as well.

Try not to get bogged down in the T&C's and booking fees...remember it's not all about the money, but also it's about where you would like to take your photography in the future. Personally I would use your time now to build a good reputation, portfolio and network.

Hey guys, now I have some images up on here, could you have a look and tell me whether the same applies, or could I be charging more then say £50 for 100 photos? Baring in mind the venue is rather large, 4/500 copacity, probs more, but thats a safe bet for a friday.. :P

Cheers.

The first gallery is good. You still have things to work on, it helps to show promoters consistency over a number of galleries and you still have to develop your own style.

i think you're well on the way to being able to charge more, but I would be certain that i could deliver good quality photographs time and time again, otherwise you might find yourself loosing work in the long run.

Cheers missvickie, i'll be doing photos for the same venues, so the consistency shouldn't be a massive problem as I know what settings work best now. Not affraid to still play with them tho :P

You still have things to work on

What do you think is the most important thing I need to be working on at the moment?

consistency

The lighting might always be similar, but each even will not, so you need to show you can get a good set of photos no matter what the night is like!

And pretty much what was said in your other post.
