That is really interesting!!!

I never knew about this...

"For those shooting with credentials, the phrase is "three songs and you're gone," said Bob Carey, the president of the National Press Photographers Association, meaning that pros are generally allowed to shoot from a designated "pit" near the stage during a band's first three songs, and then they have to leave."

I can see both sides of the debate...as a regual attende of Concerts/Gigs I will bring my own Camera to capture the moment, but at the same time I understand the annoyance it may bring to professional photographers...especially if they are DSLR's!

That can be frustating because somethimes the truely great moments don't happen until latter, but then you also think, if you can't get it in three songs, should you really be in the pit anyhow! And to be honest, I feel really intrusive if I'm there for much longer anyhow. But we all needed extra time to learn in the begining.

For me the compacts are not a problem at all...why shouldn't people be able to take good photos for their own use.. But that example they have shown, you can tell at the first glance which is the pro and which is not.

What I do find difficut is when you are working to a very specific brief, and all the togs who don't know so well, just take the whole time in the front, or dj booth or togs don't take turns onstage or just generally behave badly and don't follow stage managment requests, especially when it gets to the point of annoying the artist, so that everyone is out.

Yeah I know exactly what you mean!

Oh I hate that! It happened at Atomik Weekender 2, there was atleast three togs from Tillate, one from DSI, Chica Babe (who was their official tog) and two or three camera men all on stage (or waiting to go on stage) on the Friday night and on the Saturday night they said "No one is allowed on Stage" :(

Impossible to tell which was taken on a pro camera, easy to see which one might get paid.Personally I think theyre both a bit pants.

A G11 is hardly a run of the mill compact though is it?

Nothing with a Canon badge is 'run of the mill'... ;-)

'Official' Tog

Have decided official photographer is such a weird title....

Sometimes there is a tog working for the venue, sometimes for the promoter, sometimes for the performer, sometimes you have a few press. Many are there in their 'official' capacity. And at the end of the day, if you don't get a proper introduction to the stage crew, you can be stuffed no matter what your 'official' capacity is.

What I do find really weird when togs don't talk to each other and find out what they are there for....this feeling that one is more official than the other....a really hard one when one is working for the promoter, and the other the venue.....you can't have the night existing without each other....therefor, when you work together the night is just a breeze, when you can't even get eye contact it just becomes one hogging the stage and you waiting for any single moment you have no matter how bad!

Couldn't agree more..... If there's other togs there I usually have a chat. Tell them what I want and then leave em to it once I've got what i want. Had a great chat with some real 'pap' togs at T in the park. Some real nice togs out there who are only trying to do the same job as everyone else
