Immersive gaming - Your experiances and reccomendations
In this thread I'd like people to explain some of their favourite gaming masterpiece moments and explain why.

I have just come off the Xbox forums where I have been told that the 1000 Years of Dreams sections in Lost Odyssye were a waste of time. Shock horror I hear you cry!
For anyone who hasn't played it I'd like to explain why it helps make LO one of the best if not the best JRPG on our current generation of consoles.

You play an immortal character who has had his memory wipe for some parts in LO, and with certain actions in the game you unlock forgotton memories. Instead of flassy cutscenes or boring sections with a ton of dialouge boxes you are asked to read anywhere between fifteen to fifty pages of superbly written text, matching that of some great books I have read. Behind that is simple backdrops, sometimes not even a picture, just brilliant artisty. This coupled with class music is why LO is a true modern masterpiece.

I reccommend this to anybody who loves JRPG's or for people who want to try something different.

Great game. I'm looking forward to the sequal. If you keep your save file, you still have the same level, skills, equipment etc.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Oblivion yet.

haha, i should of, i've spend hundreds of hours on that thing - used to spend days at a time just wondering around the place exploring and fightting stuff. quality

Yeah I've done around 60 hours and haven't really touched on it. Doing all the gates near the end does my swede in.

Are you sure? I thought it was just your decisions and karma that made an effect on your save game?

I also found the driving aspect of the game pretty boring and unfortunately the map is huge and driving is a major part of the game.

26 hrs into Far Cry 2, i will concede that all the driving around is a bit of a chore, although it's still nicely implemented.

i've just unlocked the second half of the map and also bought the IED. with remote detonation it's wicked for ambushing vehicle convoys from a distance; for best effect take an RPG and sniper rifle too to pick off the leftovers. :)

i have to say it has the best roadkill zebra ragdoll physics i've ever seen in a game too. ;)

vice city - was a good one that like.

classic! loved the retro setting.

my defining GTA sandbox moment was in VC - pulling a stick-up at a jewellers shop, making good my escape on a dirtbike, pelting down the coast road, riding into the setting set, pulling wheelies, with FGTH's Two Tribes on the radio. good times. :D

I'm caining sacred 2 at the mo which has it's pro's and cons.

What i do love about it is you got like a whole world to wonder about in smashing the shit out of everything, lots and lots of weapons, amour (pretty sick armour for sure) and magic, over 500 guests, six characters to choose from all of them have their own unique mounts and lots more.

What i don't like is a serious lack in cut scenes and story line and complex puzzles.

Altthough i think a lot of the things that are lacking are because of the sheer size of the game, i've been playing for well over a month now and only reached 30% of the map today.

so i got 50 hours out of the single-player campaign on Far Cry 2 (plus a couple of hours pissing about with the excellent map editor) which is pretty good value for money if you pick it up for a tenner.

i was just re-watching the ZP review. he happens to mention immersion!

my next game should be pretty immersive too - i've given up waiting for an English version and ordered Yakuza 3 on import.

Classic. I had that on the old Sega Dreamcast, before it died. Never finished playing.

I also had some great porn that would only play on the dreamcast. I miss the old days.

Yeah i serously think this game needs a new lease of life, would look stunning on a 360 or ps3, i mean you could do so much on the dreamcast version, just imagine what you could do on a next gen console.

yeah, there are definite similarities (and both series are published by Sega).

Yakuza 3 is basically a story-led game with realistic bustling urban environments including shops, bars and restaurants to visit. real-time beat 'em up fights with loads of cool special moves to unlock. lots of side-missions and wide range of minigames.

you can't go cruising for sailors though! ;)

Definitely on my to buy list now then.

Is it only coming out on the ps3, as i've been googling it and it's all leading to ps3 sites?

yeah, all four games (there was a samurai-era spin-off between 2 and 3) are Sony exclusives.

the last two games (the PS3 ones) are yet to have English versions made too, so it's Japanese language only at the mo. still fun to play though even if you don't know the language and there's a detailed guide/walkthrough on GameFAQs.

if anyone was thinking of getting them i'd suggest buying Yakuza 2 for the PS2 first since there's an English version and you can get a feel for the controls and menu layouts. it's really cheap now as well.

Gutted it's not coming out on the 360 for sure.

it's a first-person shooter with a post-apocalyptic setting. huge range of items and good multiplayer.

here's a summary of GC's review and a link to the full article.

IN SHORT: Borderline brilliant at times and even a heavy weight of minor flaws can't spoil the superb co-op play.

PROS: Near infinite range of weapons and items and fun shooter gameplay. Excellent four-player co-op mode.

CONS: Little longevity for the single player. Weak AI, repetitive enemies and poor item trading amongst players.

SCORE: 7/10 Out: Now (UK)

i think this must be because all the games were originally made for the Japanese market (the English versions of Yak 1 and 2 came out later).

Microsoft has a really small market share in Japan - it's not uncommon for the top 10 sales chart to have no 360 games - so there's little value in making a 360 version, and the Wii wouldn't be up to handling the graphics.

that reminds me, i saw a competition recently where you could win a Wii and an HD television. what a waste! ;) there are rumours of an HD Wii though...

Another reason why i wish i got a ps3 now.
