Fallout3 Thread
Eh up. Where's the thread for this then? Just been reading the preview on GAME and wondered what the early reviews say?

I'll link this one to the front page.

Here's a review. The game has just come out in America.

I've been reading a lot of comments that's it's a disappointment to fans of the previous Fallouts and lacks some of the immersive story and characters? And yet others can't pin down exactly what they miss, they just...miss something.

Anyway, the VATs system sounds pretty cool, and I'm glad it's also got the standard combat and the idea you need to plan combat strategically to take out multiple foes and also avoid doing too much damage to useful items (combat armour) is great. But that's coming from someone who hasn't had much of a go on most recent games.

Any idea if you can play this on a SD tv? I'm probably going to be mugging myself off even if I could right?

You can play any hi-def game on a sdtv. I did for over a year.

In a way it made me appreciate more so the moment i finally got my hdtv.

If you only have one option, console or hdtv then get the console.

Sweet. That's me decided then. First game on the 360. Just got to hope GAME will be open to giving that out as part of an instore bundle.

Anyone played the previous Fallout installments?

Hah, reading these reviews, I'm starting to think I should pick up both (easily done if I'm not buying the HD for a bit) as this bit lessens my excitement:

'Once I got the hang of this, my combat tactics turned from FPS-style strafing to just running up into the faces of my enemies, triggering VATS, and blowing their heads off with a combat shotgun or a Chinese assault rifle (which is way better than the regular assault rifle). This turned combat into more of a chore than any sort of exciting gameplay element, but the alternative of facing your enemies head-on, in real time, wasn't any better.'

Anyone found a game that matches Deus Ex for RPG/FPS fusion? That, and its sequel (though not as much as the story wasn't as immersive), are one fo the few games I've loved every minute of up to completion.

i imagine most punters (myself included) will be getting this off the back of Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion from the same company. the first two Fallout games were PC/Mac only and came out ten years ago.

Oblivion was huge. if FO3 is on a similar scale you might not need another game before Xmas - but if you do get one you better make it Dead Space! ;)

Heh, sounds a bit of a cop out, but I'm already telling myself I'd get irritated with the combat system in Dead Space. The idea of an 'Alien' type atmosphere is very appealing, but being confined like that doesn't. Will try Fallout first, and see how Gears 2 does in the reviews.

Post apocalyptic storytelling ftw!

I know COD5 will take up loads of time just like COD4 did

Played Fallout 2 years ago and although i havent had a chance to play Fallout 3 yet i know why fans of the previous games were let down.

Basically Bethesda decided to lose all the ingame jokes from the previous games, i.e. all the satire and piss takes out of the real world so to create a more immersive game where you werent reminded your in a game.

This means a lot of the humour which made Fallout great to the fans has been lost, i cant remember the jokes from previous games as they were years ago but i can remember being in stitches laughing at the sick sick conversations you could have.

None the less it still looks a blinding game i will get.

Interesting. A few of the reviews have picked up on this, and almost none of them have described it as a bug as such. Hardly a deal breaker now you know about it. Reminds me of FF7.

I dont understand this comment. As someone who has played many many shooters. Dead Space is the only game I can remember where it isn't a chore to shoot the same enemys time after time.

There is a good variety of freaky shit and they all attack you differently.

One enemy is not as fast as the others but drags along a glowing orange tumor like thing with it.
It's filled with explosive chemicals so if it gets near you, it'll swing at you and kill itself and you. Kinda like a suicide moster !

but if you shoot it from afar then you take it out and anything else near by.

Just encountered some super fast running aliens.

Sorry btw.

*goes back to epic game

I like how realistic it sounds, with you foraging for makeshift weapons rather than randomly picking up an assault rifle. I guess I just want a next gen Alien/Aliens game and figured this wouldn't be as much fun. Guess I've been corrected.

thinking about it, there was quite a major one in Oblivion too - in the final Thieves Guild quests there was a throne room scene where someone sat down backwards in empty space and you couldn't move. :\

uesp.net (edit: Oblivion spoilers ahoy!)
