Eh up. Where's the thread for this then? Just been reading the preview on GAME and wondered what the early reviews say?

have you played Oblivion, Dave? sounds like a very similar format

I'd say its better than oblivion so far.

;)

It is Oblivion. But with improvements.

It is Oblivion. But with improvements.

unfortunately with some bugs as well. I found particulaly funny one - try speaking to a travelling merchant while his swimming with his head above water so the conversation is allowed. When he's introducing himselg his head will make a full 360 turn anti-clockwise. I've got it on my phone :)

Also occasionally you will see people walking into walls or each other while facing you expecting a conversation. The game's greatness makes it easy to overlook these though.

so you've heard of Oblivion... ;)

well in that case i hope you can still get the Blue Suede Shoes (with Fortify Sneak bonus). :)

unfortunately with some bugs as well

i'd heard that. i guess to be expected with a game this complex and freeform.

Screw 3rd person !

This game is so big. I was trying to complete a side quest. Ended up being a 2 hour side quest. When I completed it i unlocked 4 more side quests.

Not even touching the main story at the moment.

This game is so well thought out. When I blew up megaton, the guy on the radio (you can have it playing as you walk around) was telling everyone it was me. Cunt. Then my dad comes up to me in one of the later missions and tells me he's heard i did it. He confronted me. I used the lying perk and he didn't really believe me and said he will bring it up with me again later!

I then find one of the stupid bints who was blown up in the blast, alive and well and now living as a zombie in the underworld lol. Crazy.

There's over 50 perks to unlock every time you level up.

I'm such an evil cunt in this !

*slight spoiler*

There's one mission where you have to find nice people you have already met, zap them with this stun gun so they go dumb, you then have to strap a bomb collar around them and inform them they are now a slave and must report to the slave town or their head will explode !

Apart from the game being pretty dam unforgiving in places (guns break easily, money is hard to get, some enemys are crazy hard) I have no complaints yet.

Oh hang on, It does freeze sometimes.

Best thing is, the perks shape the game, along with your good/neutral/bad decisions, if you are finding one area of the game hard, it's possible to upgrade your speech/barter/hacking etc to shape the game in your favour.

How's the first person thing working out, that never appeals to me unless it's a shooter. Though I must say that Mirrors Edge really has changed my viewpoint.

You've never played oblivion ? Deus Ex ?

It makes you feel like your the person your playing as. Fallout 3 is half shooter.

What gives boy.

I played through Oblivion twice on the PC and loved it .. I just don't see how this compares to it. I've got to Megaton and am just not feeling this game at all. The Pipboy interface is horrible!

I thought the same but then you get used to it.

i've only played one evening - and spent half of that reading the manual, trying to pick a name, choosing stats and skills, picking from 40 types of facial hair and playing through the superbly integrated training/exposition level - but i'm hooked!

i'd've thought that if you liked Oblivion then what's not to like about a new version with a great fusion of 50's style, sci fi and post-apocalypseness? you have crazed survivors instead of bandits, ruins and buildings instead of villages and dungeons, mutated beasties instead of monsters...

(speaking of which i just saw a customer today with the surname Roach. radroach! haha!)

one big difference to Oblivion is the initial impact when you first venture out into the outdoors. Oblivion had this gorgeous greenery and river, but Fallout was obviously quite a contrast, especially as i came out in the dark of night. i wondered if it would ever get any brighter! (it does) great atmosphere so far, helped by the radio stations Dave mentioned with talk and vintage music.

the wide range of skills and perks is wicked. i like to play through with one character that covers all the bases but - moreso than Oblivion - i think it might be more appropriate here to play multiple times with different perks. i like to have a char with Rogue skillz so am pleased to see that the usual options to sneak (with stealth attack bonus) and pickpocket are still here, although you have to suffer the guilt of getting negative karma now!

i miss the harvesting/alchemy of Oblivion but am looking forward to creating my own equipment from scrap. the random collection of items (i'm a natural hoarder!) seems more appropriate here as you scavenge the remains of society for gear and food (crispy squirrel bits ftw!). i like the retro vibe of the Pipboy's 80's stylee monochrome monitor but agree it takes a little getting used to.

soooo... the obvious question is: has anyone found the Republic of Dave?!! i saw this mentioned in an ad for the player guide.

I have it on my map in the north east of the map. Haven't been there yet though.

Just did the mission where you have to steal the decleration of independance. What a fucking mission. It kicked my ass bad. Traps, turrets and robots with flamethrowers/rockets.

Found afew work benches so I can start to make some crazy weapons !

If anyone hasn't got dogmeat yet, get him because he ROCKS!

Spoiler:

He's in the scrapyard near Agatha's house - north across the river from megaton

So should I buy this

perhaps read a few reviews to see if it's for you, but it is an awesome game (average score on Metacritic still 93% but now averaged over 48 pro reviews) and if you explore and do all the side quests it'll last you for months.

names in games just get crazier!

think Mad Max - post-nuclear wasteland society, improvised settlements made from scrap, scavenging from ruined buildings. most of the food is radioactive and you have to monitor your radiation sickness.

Megaton

i was skipping through a few GameFAQS posts before the game came out in the UK and thought it said Megatron. :)

yeah, i love the fact there's an individual forum for every single game. great for asking specific questions or chatting about whatever game you're playing.

it's not as cosy as our happy little community here though. :) i think DSI:VG is a good size.

obviously GameFAQS is also useful for guides, walkthroughs, etc!
