WARNING: BAD PAYERS LIST
Be warned - the following clients need to named for bad payment.

1. ANDY NORTHROP (RHYTHM AT WORK, CAMBRIDGE) - Invoiced NOV 2007.
Pretends to be someone else when he answers the phone at his work place at Doubletree Hotel, Cambridge. Has made no effort to even pay a penny, even though I once considered him a friend.

2. WINSTON YOUNG (THE TELEGRAPH, BRIXTON) - Invoices JUN 2007. Has made no effort to pay, and wen I go to the Telegraph, he claims to have no money even though he has a million pound property. He likes to build up credit, then liquidates the company, wiping all debts. He has done this twice in the last four years. It's because of people like Winston that we have a credit crunch.

3. MARK WILKINSON (KIDOLOGY) - Invoiced JAN 2009. Admittedly keeps good communication, and he has paid off some of the initial debt, all be it in drips and drabs, but he still owes a considerable amount, and it's almost 6 months since my request for payment.

HOW TO ENSURE YOU GET PAID
As a rule, I never send final PDF artwork or eflyers (without "SAMPLE" in a tint written on it), until the money is in my hand, bank or PAYPAL account. Even if you've known them for years, (as with the my list above), people will still fuck you over.
Never send logo's without an upfront payment, or send so small that they are unusable. Ensure "SAMPLE" is also written across them.

Has anyone got any other ways they ensure they get paid?

In total £1050!

I have always found baseball bats handy when it comes to people paying what is owed usually they pay before you have to take any action
I've had to do that before, but I don't have their home addresses, and I find turning up on their door step (without a bat) is enough.

You should maybe take a look into the jurisdiction of Copyright law, see if you can't use that against the guys with outstanding payments.

Ha ha, ANDY NORTHROP has just emailed me.
I think he saw sense even though he pretended to be someone else at his work.
I've known him for years and to think I wouldn't recognise his voice is really dumb ad embarrassing!
Anyway he's proposed to pay £20 a month by Direct Debit (starting tomorrow), as he's skint - even though he has a full time job, no kids or girlfriend, and promotes events at Fez in Cambridge!
At least it saves me having to drive to Cambridge!

For ANDY NORTHROP and WINSTON YOUNG yes.
For MARK WILKINSON, I usually see him on the circuit every so often.

in addition to the watermark, encrypt the PDF with password protection (distiller can do it automatically or via the secure option in Acrobat Pro) - The client can view it in Acrobat reader, but not print / send through a rip or rasterise it in Photoshop. Only release the password once you've been paid...

Sounds perfect. I've never heard of that before

just tried to do it,
It's s bit too complicated and time consuming for my tastes.
If you've got a quick fire routine, please post it.

Yeh that's him, he's just recently 'resurrected' his events.
Booking Mark Knight and Darren Emmerson.... maybe that's the reason he's skint!!!!

Still quicker than chasing clients for payment ;)

Distiller - CMD + S and set the permissions from there, It does it automatically then.
Don't forget to change the password frequently.
