Platform 12 Showcases...

Platform 12 Showcases... is the name for smaller, more intimate parties Platform 12 will produce in 2008 which aims to bring very special talent right up close.

On Friday 8th February, we kick-start the series with an artist that has rocked Platform 12 both as a band and as a DJ - Cicada

Musically, references have been made to the likes of Blondie, Can, New Order, The Sugarcubes, The Cocteau Twins, Daft Punk and Quincy Jones. But Cicada, are a whole different proposition. Melding their influences into a wholly original sound has made them a unique prospect for the late Noughties – the kind of band that the rock kids ‘get’ just as much as club kids do.

2 rooms of music featuring DJ sets from Platform 12 residents & special guests with a music policy that will make you dance your f*cking arses off (whilst also allowing to enjoy a few drinks with your mates)

A gorgeous selection of songs" Mixmag
?Excels with it?s retro vs modern feel? DJ mag
?This band?s retro pop could define the summer? Bent (Album of The Month)

In 2006, Cicada picked up rave plaudits for their debut album, ?Cicada?, everywhere from Mixmag to Music Week, DJ magazine to Record Collector and beyond, gave them glowing praise, highlighting the gap in the scene for an electro pop band with the song-writing to match their hooks. Now establishing themselves on the live circuit, with acclaimed gig performances already under their belts, they?re set to be a mainstay of festivals across the globe in 2007.

Musically, references have been made to the likes of Blondie, Can, New Order, The Sugarcubes, The Cocteau Twins, Daft Punk and Quincy Jones. But Cicada, are a whole different proposition. Melding their influences into a wholly original sound has made them a unique prospect for the late Noughties ? the kind of band that the rock kids ?get? just as much as club kids do.

The band comprises Aaron Gilbert (also known as Mr Natural), Alex Payne, and Icelandic vocalist, Heidrun Bjornsdottir (formerly of Gloss and 4AD?S Gus Gus). Alex and Aaron have a wealth of experience in producing, making music, and running labels. Both were born out of the electronic scene, but with an equal dislike of musical boundaries - hence their cross-genre forays and remixes for the likes of New Order, The Editors, 13 Senses, Depeche Mode, Lorraine, Seelenluft, The Source, Mish Mash and more.

A slew of hot singles such as ?Electric Blue?, ?All About You, ?Things You Say?, and ?Cut Right Through?, combined with a stunning debut long player, have earned the group a global fan-base. With territories such as Japan, Holland, Australia, and many more picking up on the buzz that first emanated from the UK, Cicada?s take on intelligent, song-based electro is becoming an unstoppable force.

Almost worth flying back for... I've had the pleasure of hearing a lot of Cicada's new stuff and it's a lot tougher than the first album.
