What are flotation tanks usually used for?

What are flotation tanks usually used for?

For sensory deprivation, with no sensory input to the brain it starts to look inwards ;)

Have done a session before, the experience I had was great I started to drift off and see dream like imagery which i could control to a certain extent, felt amazingly chilled and relaxed afterwards as well. That session was for an hour and I really only let go towards the end of it, definitely would do it again for a few sessions i think but don't think there are places in Norwich.

Thanks BaNe for the links, the DMT one is wickid! Anyone dabbled with it? Will try it sometime when i am ready and think i will get the best out of it.

I've been looking at floatation tanks as sensory dep stuff has had me interested in the past. Floatation tank sessions are in the region of £40-50 /hour and available in most big city areas.
A friend of mine told me last year of a place up off of the coast of Scotland where they used to run sensory dep weekends where you'd be buddied up with someone from their centre and blindfolded for the entire time you are there. Allegedly by the second or third day peoples senses are so in tune they have no need for the 'buddy' and they experience intense visuals.

Sounds like a plan, trouble is getting a place with enough tanks for people. Most I've found in any one center was 9 thus far.

Well, why dont we just find a swimming pool center and black out all the windows, turn the lights of and fill the pool with salt, one massive flotation tank.

John Cage did the whole sensory deprivation thing before he created 4minutes33... he claimed he could hear two sounds; a low rumbling rhythm and an erratic high pitched squeaking... turns out it was the sound of his blood pumping round his body and his nerves twitching... thus there's never really 'silence'...

and he was a bender...

...werent they all :) x
