A Little help loves?
I really enjoy taking pictures at events and such, but I don’t have the funds to purchase an SLR just yet. I would like to start off with a good compact camera, see if photography is something I’m skilled at and truly interested in and if so purchase an SLR in the future. Anyone know of an impressive compact out there for around $250-$260(£180)? I took the pics in the albums on my page with a Canon Power shot A720. It's a nice camera, but it was a gift I bought for my ex-boyfriend and he kept it in the break up. If you could think of something that would one up his it would be fantastic! That’s it, Thanks :)

Why not get a second hand slr? Nikon D40 or canon 350D would be a good starter

The body of an SLR is not the costly part. She maybe able to get a used 350D for $200ish but it's useless without a lens, unless she goes for the cheapo kit lens. One of my lens costs the same and one of my lens costs more than my Canon 400D body.

I think her plan is good. If she is not even sure what compact camera to buy, she is going to have a real hard time figuring out what SLR lens to get. Heck, I still can't figure out which lens I should get next. LOL. I'd definitely make sure this photography passion is not just flavor of the week before dropping the money on SLR.

If you like it and are good at it, then you can upgrade your lens and get an external flash.

That's a really good idea, seeing as how I know I will want an SLR in the future, why waste money on a compact if I could start off with an SLR in the first place and upgrade it as my skills improve. Thanks!

Is there anything to look out for when purchasing one second hand?
