Unless you get booked [some of us do], you work on the team, you know the promoters, or you're promoting yourself, you most likely pay.

Gotta remember, you're not a professional photographer that's getting paid to do the event, you're there doing your own thing [most of the time].

This all applies to Arizona, I don't know about anywhere else.

Spotting for "Don't Stay In" is a good way to get started with event photography. But the only thing you will get out of it is good practice and you will be doing a lot of free promoting for "Don't Stay In" for practically nothing in return.
There is however a lot of great advice and tips on this site.

"Want me to cover an event, take photos of you, or do something with a camera and give me money?"

If I had the logs of you saying you were going to stop attending events because you didn't have the money to attend and so on, I'd post them.

IIRC, you aren't getting paid for photographing at an event any time soon, at least in Arizona, are you? I don't count the photobooth at Freeze this Saturday because that's not actually covering an event :]

Don't act like a smart ass, I can't afford to attend events if I don't get in free 20+$ a week when you don't have a steady paycheck is a lot of money. Plus if I was going to pay I wouldn't take over 200 pictures because I would shoot for myself.

Do I get paid? Yes on occasions

What do I normally do? Bring a tip jar

I do other things with a camera to get money it isn't all event stuff. Besides that point just because you know promoters doesn't mean you get in free, normally you have to provide a service to make it worth while for them.

If your working on a "team" I am assuming the crew that helps set up the event. Well of course they are getting in free, they are WORKING.

about 80% of the time I am working for free because I am supporting the scene. I am not going out of my way to get into events for promoters that don't try to keep in contact.

Also originally for Freeze I was going to get 150$ worth in lighting equipment but because of certain issues that will not be happening.

Maybe when you take thousands of pictures a weekend, have very high quality work, and do it for almost little to no price you can have a photo booth. Zulu does nothing but bust his ass with his work. He drives out to events all over to take pictures for the kids to see. I don't think anyone gets hassled like he does for photos but I rarely see him without a smile while he does his work. Please tell me who you are and what you do before you take shots at someone who is doing so much for us. Please show me something that gives you half the credit to suck Zulu's left nut when it comes to photos. You know what.. don't actually cause I don't care. Attention whore is attention whore.

Considering I don't go out 2 times a weekend to parties, I don't have the ability to take a "few thousand pictures" each weekend. As for quality, I've never once said I was a good photographer. Zulu has a good many years of experience on me, and I've also always respected his work.

Every Rave I go to I take as many pictures as I can, whether I get a few that are Zulu's quality or not is a matter of luck on my part.

Try taking a camera to a rave, you'll get hassled. Zulu probably gets it more because he is well known as a pro-photographer and everyone wants a great picture.

Take a breather Paul, I'm not seeking attention. I was pointing out that, in the end, even the #1 spotter in Arizona, and one which every promoter knows, doesn't get in to raves free, at least not all the time. The chances of the OP having Zulu's skill at photography is very unlikely, and I don't think he'd have the equipment either.

If you think I was bashing Zulu, or anyone else, I'm sorry but you misunderstood what I meant. And, as I said already, Zulu has a fuckton more experience than I do with photography, as I've only been involved in it since January. I think, for that amount of time, I do damn well with it.

That's called taking a shot..

No breather needed. Instant gratification is non-existent.

on occasions, the pictures arn't about money but if I need some gas cash I will. I need to start charging a small fee at least to feed myself.
