Hence where I would never bring up my kids in a culture where arms are common sense.

Looks like an open day at a military base somewhere, also those arent american cars or trucks in the background, maybe east europe or Israel...

let a child that age even look at a gun let alone play around with one

there must be a pecker joke in that somewhere.

I know the issue of the 'right to bear arms' is a contentious issue in the States. Personally I think the argument that it is a part of the American identity is pretty sad. Why would a person define themselves by their right to own a potentially deadly weapon, no matter the history involved? the right to defend oneself by deadly means, from who? Someone else with the right to bear arms. Lolz.

Just look at the children in this picture, they're not old enough to understand "gun safety". They see shiny new toys, not deadly weapons. Recockulous.

It's the toys for guns program innit.

in a culture where arms are commonplace, it is a good idea to be familiar with them, so shooting classes would be a good way of introducing guns to kids.

Until they take them to school and shoot all their friends, teachers & anyone else in the way

Only in the U.S......

lol @ americans and protecting themselves with guns. I am 22 and have never had a gun class in my life yet I could still protect myself. Seriously do you guys actually carry guns around with you just in case?

We don't, at least not most of us . . .

Classes are good because they show you how to handle them safely, reduces accidents if you for any reason ever have to touch one.

I live alone in a town where I have no close family. I have one at home because my place has been broken into, and since I don't know by who, I need a way to protect myself physically against any possible intruder (in case I'm home next time) . . . The only way to do that is by maintaining a distance between them and myself, and the most efficient way to do that is by having a weapon that can cross that distance. The thing NEVER leaves home.

That doesn't mean that I'd even have to fire the gun to make use of it.

I hope I never have to use it, but the sad fact is that this world produces people who do harm to each other, so the possibility remains.

I wish our society was mature enough to do completely without weapons, however.

---
Also . . . that's just irresponsible. Letting kids handle guns in that manner. Teaching how to operate for safety is different from letting them just play with them.

Just noticed that the way Fabe's profile picture is set, it looks like he's jamming a shotgun into the side of the kid who's wearing the sunhat's head.

Do you really need classes to tell you to keep the safety on while holding a loaded gun?

We believe we know how to handle guns because we've seen them on the telly. In reality we know nothing. We are also led to believe that we're not allowed guns for our own safety and that we are more civilized than our American cousins. Hmm.

Just because guns are illegal over here doesn't mean you won't be confronted by someone who doesn't care about the law. So......

is a very reasonable statement.

US 2006 All Firearm Deaths and rates per 100,000 people:

Number of
Deaths Population Crude Rate Age-Adjusted Rate**
30,896 298,362,973 10.36 10.22

Can anyone find stats for all gun related deaths in the uk?

I think I can see where you're going with this but you'd have to balance those figures with the number of crimes committed against a person because they were unable to defend themselves. Which is probably impossible.

And before you all start, I am not advocating the decriminalization of guns in this country, just trying to balance out the "red-neck" taunts.

How is it dubious, I live in Leeds, hardly gun crime capital is it. Why would I be better protected having had gun classes or even carrying a gun? If I was some big time gangster who would need to deal with nasty people yeah, but im just a normal girl and god forbid if anything was ever to happen to me it would be some little petty criminal with a kitchen knife trying to find something for his next fix. I obviously could never be fully prepared for something like that but I'm confident in my ability to not get hurt without the need to shoot someone!

Guns create drama in my opinion and should be left to people who really need them, not everyone and their mam.

actually i know quite a lot and own my own guns, they are not against the law, they are licensed - unlike in the usa where you can just go buy one (in some states).

i know how to handle a gun because i learned how to shoot and i certainly would never try any of the rookie shit you see on the tv for several reasons - the most important one being - MOST OF IT IS DRAMATISED TO LOOK COOL FOR FILM AND DOES NOT WORK IN REAL LIFE

shock horror - something on the big screen was made up!

Nice one spesh. Now hands up everyone else in this country who has been taught how to use guns.....

they are not against the law, they are licensed

Okay.

some little petty criminal with a kitchen knife trying to find something for his next fix

You make it sound quite quaint. How would you go about defending yourself in this situation?

My point is that a gun can be a great leveler. A five foot, six stone person and a six and a half foot, fourteen stone person become equal when both armed. And as galexia says, it's about keeping a distance between you and your assailant.
