Squatting
This is a thread about stealing property, not toilet ettiquette.

thisislondon.co.uk

You have probably read about a gang of hippy artists that are breaking into mansions in Belgravia, Chelsea and Knightsbridge that are privatly owned and squatting there until they get evicted.

Scum or Heros?

Or a place for those scummy hippies. Perhaps they can do some painting and make the place look better? I hear they have good party's.

I am very happy to report that the massive estate you can see from the elephant and castle train station platform (sorry I don't know the name) is largely boarded up now. I can't believe they ever house human in that place. :S

I am undecided on the issue of squatting, but Danny I have to pull you up on your use of the Ferrier estate as an example of homes standing empty.

1. They are empty because they are about to be demolished.
2. They are being demolished for a good reason.
3. Have you every seen the Ferrier Estate or been to Kidbrooke?

There is a VERY good reason those flats are being demolished. They were unfit for human habitation. A breach of human rights

I am familiar with the Ferrier estate and this is all true - its a shit hole...
Greenwich council were offered the same solution when it came to the Tavy Bridge Estate in Thamesmead - fix up or pull down... They have decided to fix the accomodation for those living in council owned properties.

The only issue i have with this is that those in council housing on the Ferrier Estate are being moved to Thamesmead - the strong gang culture on the estates are bound to clash - but thats for another thread i guess

What gets me is the stuff that happened in Bristol where the squatters demonstrated about there squats being knocked down to be made into new council housing, shooting themselves in the foot surely.

That doesnt make any sense,
We all know communisim doesnt work, if people don't earn things they don't appreciate them, and if people aren't given the opportunity to become very rich & reach their goals (ie. owning lots of properties, maybe only living in one at a time) everyone would lose the motivation to do anything, and soon everyone would be homeless!!

Who mentioned communism? In a nation as rich as ours, decent affordable housing shouldn't be a luxury to a point where people bust their balls in order to afford a two bed semi with an indoor lavy. It should be a fucking right. It's repackaged slavery.

libcom.org

"In his book, 'Who Owns Britain' (2001), Kevin Cahill takes a long, hard look at UK land ownership. His findings surprised many: the Royal Family for instance owns UK land equivalent to an average-sized county. Just six thousand people own two-thirds of the entire supply of UK land - forty million of the sixty million acres of UK land are owned by a clique comprised of the Crown, aristocrats and a few institutions.

Or, put another way, 70% of UK land is owned by 1% of the population. Some might say the extent of the concentration of UK land ownership is feudal-like, or at least unhealthy in a progressive, modern, liberal democracy with a dense and rapidly expanding population.

Cahill then goes on to put in context these figures on the degree to which owning UK land is a privilege. The British population - circa 60 million - is housed in 24 million dwellings, which sit on just 4.4 million acres (which is equal to 7.7% of the UK land supply). Justunder 4/5ths of these 60 million residents live on 3.5 million acres, or 5.8% of the total supply of UK land. It is also surprising many that only 8% of UK land has been developed. That of course is not to say that the UK has 92% capacity for new homes: a large proportion of UK land is undevelopable due to the prevailing local environment."

Land investment is a minority sport, from which a few reap spectacular rewards.

Sorry, thought you meant this:
The whole concept of ownership I think is questionable
in a different context.
