What a cracking way to start the festivities!
Always a 'must-do' on the Hong Kong calendar, this years' HK Sevens kicked off in in fantastic voice with the mighty Fiji defeating lowly Sri Lanka 45-0. However, the HK Sevens is not just about the rugby. Fans from across the world come to not only enjoy world class rugby, but to join in the biggest party in town.

Often used as a warm-up day for the 'real' party on the weekend, this friday was unusually packed, and the always hectic South Stand was at times like a club, with a one in one out policy being adopted. (For those of you who don't know, the south stand is where the real fun is, over 18s only!) People come from far and wide, dressed in the most outrageous costumes, this event resembles a carnival more than a sporting event!

This is of course, lest we forget (shame on us), a sporting contest. And there was a healthy rivalry and often amusing banter between the fans. Many times would you hear 'stand up if you hate the french!' Normally I wouldn't hesitate in joining in the action, however on this occassion they were facing the yanks, and even the french aren't as bad as the yanks hehe! Each match was thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated by the partisan HK crowd. However, the biggest cheer was reserved for the England vs. Hong Kong match.

The two fans' favourites slugged it out and for a moment it seemed England would come out comfortable winners. But a HK try from some poor England defending was greeted by the biggest cheer of them all, with the 40'000 strong crowd all on their feet. England proved too strong for their Hk counterparts and eventually prevailed 38-7 in an entertaining contest.

Day 1 kicked off with a bang, and this only served to whet the appetite for tomorrow. 1st up, a hard earned drink in Lang Kwai Fong and Wan Chai, then back to the stadium for more thrilling action early in the morning!

The rest of the results are as follows:

Fiji 45-0 Sri Lanka
South Africa 59-0 Chinese Taipei
Samoa 49-5 China
New Zealand 41-5 Italy
England 38-7 Hong Kong
France 5-14 USA
Scotland 31-7 Portugal
Wales 7-33 Tonga
Canada 26-5 Japan
Kenya 14-10 Russia
Argentina 24-14 Korea
Australia 19-12 Tunisia
