Over the past three years, Summer Summons has grown from small roots to become one of Bristol’s most consistent regular club nights. With an emphasis on fun, funkiness and straightforward goodtime grooves, it’s a bi-monthly party without pretentiousness for people who just want to have fun.
Parties currently take place at Dojo in Bristol, one of the city’s leading underground venues. In its intimate cellar confines, Summer Summons’ party-minded residents are joined by guests from around Bristol and beyond. Although Summer Summons was founded as a house night, you can regularly hear everything from garage, disco and techno to Italo, breakbeat and electro. Great care is taken over décor, with each party being given a specific theme. This makes every single party very special indeed.
Summer Summons is the brainchild of former Timbuk2 promotions manager Abbie Hobbs and first started life in 2007 as a weekly shindig over the summer months. Abbie didn’t want the party to end as Autumn rolled around so continued as a monthly bash at the tiny Bank Tavern pub in the city centre. With those parties a huge success, Summer Summons moved to Dojo in March 2008.
Over the years a huge variety of DJs and party crews have guested at Summer Summons. These include (deep breath) James Talk (who was given his Bristol debut by Summer Summons), Future Freakz, Marc Vedo, Tom Budden, Damien Schneider, the We Like To Party DJs, Placid, Puffin Jack, Richard Carnage, Funky Onion, the Discotheque DJs, Dave Kirik, Jake Davis, Mitch and honourary residents The Kelly Twins, who can regularly be found smashing out the best underground party jams around.
The current Summer Summons resident DJ line-up is one of the strongest and most varied in Bristol. Al Dare rose to fame as resident at the BYTE and Socialism parties. A brilliant DJ who utilizes Ableton Live to make his sets unique and bursting with energy, Al is just as happy playing electro and indie dance as classic acid house, garage or Italo disco. Then there’s Bristol veteran Sell By Dave, one half of the Bedmo Disco/Thumbs Aloft DJ/production duo. A former Editor or IDJ Magazine, Sell By is as happy playing deep and groovesome warm-up sets as party-friendly peak-time stormers and hands-in-the-air late night wonkiness. The resident line-up is completed by rising stars The Bootyclappers. Given their big break by Summer Summons, the Plymouth born, Bristol-based duo are bass freaks of the highest order and always provide the party with some much needed low-end funk.
