A bit about Cockney-Nutjob

Since being Born in 1977 in Essex, music has always been a major part of my life, due to my Father being a Jazz musician and a Musical Genius - he can play ANY instrument to a high standard.

In the mid 80's a film called 'Breakdance' was released. This was the foundation to everything i do today, cause without seeing this film i might not be into what i am now. Basically for those that havent seen the film it was about the then new street scene in the US, giving me a young impressionable kid a good insight into Break dancing, Graffiti, Hip Hop, Freestyle MCing and DJ's scratching, cutting and doubling up old raregroove/soul tracks to make the Hip Hop Breaks. After seeing this movie I first explored the dancing element and can remeber attempting to do break dancing at a school disco, to Chaka Khan. As cool as this sounds I was already seen as a bit of an outcast and pretty much all of the kids understandably were into the more comercial sounds of Stock, Aitken & Waterman, so everyone thought I was a bit weird.

By The time I was 12 I was heavily into Hip Hop listening to the likes of Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane, Erick B & Rakeem, NWA, the mighty BDP (who I saw in concert a year later with Miss Melodie), Ice-T, De La Soul, Kool Mo Dee and many other great artist. I regularly spent Saturday afternoon's with my elder brother in the local specialist record shop where we both bought up vinyl with money earnt from doing several paper rounds. With all the vinyl I was gagging to get some proper decks, a mixer and my own sound system, instead of using my Fathers, who wasn't too kean on the whole idea of scratching records etc. Although as I spent all my paper round income on vinyl and didnt have wealthy parents. So at this stage of my life this was just a dream.

By the time I was 14/15 my musical tastes had changed. I was getting into what was then called 'Hardcore' or 'Breakbeat' and was listening to Rebel MC, Ragga Twins, Prodigy, Acen, Shut up & Dance to name but a few. From this when i was 16/17 I found my way into the Jungle scene and as I was then working full time and able to by some decks and a mixer. I then was in the local record shop buying up the latest jungle tracks. Within 6 months i was able to mix to a good standard and was then keen to get in front of a crowd. I managed to get a weekly set at the under 18's night at the local night club (in Southend) playing under the name of 'DJ Sniper'. I also then managed to play a few times on the local pirate station and at various one off parties.

Soon after turning 18 I played at a house party. For this particular party I had to bring all my equipment. For some strange reason I also decided to bring my entire record collection, which turned out to be a big mistake. Some of the local scum bags/nut cases turned up nicked all my records and smashed up my decks. I was upset about my decks but the bigger blow was losing all my vinyl, alot of which couldnt be bought again. After getting over the shock and sadness I decided to knock the whole DJing thing on the head.

Soon after I left home and the town that i grew up in and moved to London. I continued to follow the Jungle scene for the next couple of years, but spent all money buying clothes and raving at clubs like the Lazerdrome, The Rocket, Camden Palace The Island Ilford.

Around the time I turned 20 my music tastes changed again and got into the whole UK Garage scene. Again I was more of a club goer up until I hit 25 when, I had managed to save some money, due to not going out so much and was keen to take up a hobby. I got myself a pair of technics and started mixing Garage for about a year. The scene started to die a bit and at similar time i was also getting back into Hip Hop and R&B. So I then became and R&B/Hip Hop DJ, at first as just a hobby, but eventually i started to play out at a few bars/private parties in London. I also traded in by Technics for some Pioneer CDJ 1000's.

When I was 29 I moved from London to Bournemouth to be with my Mrs who was studying at the University. Soon after i started getting into the Whole Nu-Skool Breaks scene. I had heard it in clubs in London a few years before, but never really investigated it further. Anyway, i then started to build a collection of Nu-Skool Breaks tracks and about a year later (the start of 2008) got the urge to have a second crack of being more than just a bedroom DJ. I put demo's out here there and every where but got no joy, until summer when I managed to get a slot on Covert Radio (an internet radio station), where I play every Saturday 18:00 - 20:00.

Still keen to play in front of a live crowd late in 2008 i set up a promotions company Boogaloo Cru. I used 'Boogaloo' in the name because back in the my younger days there was a sequal to the 'Breakdance' movie called 'Electric Boogaloo'.

As a DJ I confess not to be the greatest technically, nevertheless I can mix to a good standard and can scratch a little. I feel my main strength as a DJ is in the selection of tracks that I play. Due to listening to alot of music and it being a lifelong passion of mine, (I spend at least 6 hours per week searching through potential music to play) I am able to offer my listners/following what is in my opinion a supreme selection of music from what is available. At the moment I am looking to build up a good following in Bournemouth and London, so am therefore available to play at short notice for free at either location.
