Greg Shaw has always been into dance music, ever since his first encounter with the clubbing scene. He’d visit numerous nights where he was given a taste of all the different styles of music at the time, but he’ll tell anyone that his first passion was always with trance.
In 2001, while studying at Sheffield, Greg managed to save enough money to invest in a set of Numark Belt drive decks, bought himself some tunes, and started to learn how to mix. Two years on, he teamed up with two class mates and together they founded their first Trance night “Bleach” at the Sheffield Student Union, the success of which gave them the opportunity to start another night also called “Beach”, this time though, the style was House.
This was where it all changed for Greg. He’d had enough of Trance and so started buying House tunes; he’s never looked back. He began by playing mainly Funky/Vocal House, and this got him noticed by London club night Moochin. Regular gigs for Moochin over the year helped his style evolve and he developed a tougher electro sound.
After moving South again, Greg was asked to join internet radio station Sub FM. He spent a year going from strength to strength with his Wednesday night slot pulling over 1000 listeners per show.
A huge success came for Greg when he was made resident for Moochin and played his first gig as resident at Ministry of Sound. He continued playing at clubs all over London, including Plan B, Inigo, Aquarium, The White House and even some charity boat parties, and started to play with a Jackin’ vibe.
Another big step came in 2005 when Greg was given the chance to play at Glastonbury for the charity Modern Amazons.
In 2006 Greg moved to Bristol, and after a few gigs was made resident for Just Jack and the new night Dirty Blue. This allowed him the opportunity to play at Deepgroove’s night Play, at Koolwater, Slinky and all of the main clubs in Bristol including the Carling Academy.
Greg also had his first international gig when he was given the chance to play for the hugely successful Bristol night Empathy in Ibiza.
Later that year Greg beat many of the top DJ’s in Bristol and won a competition crowning him “Best Bristol DJ”.
Throughout his career, Greg’s sound has continued to evolve, and in 2007 he developed a more Progressive edge, but still managing to keep the fun, energetic sound he’s become known for. He was also given the chance to start a new bank holiday after-hours night called “Drama”. Since its launch in Easter, Drama has been hugely successful and remained fresh thanks to its ability to offer something different and provide diverse bookings, while always keeping Bristol’s local talent in mind.
Greg’s career has afforded him the opportunity to play alongside some of the biggest names in the industry such as Mr C, Mark Knight, Buckley, Lee Mortimer, Mutiny, Deepgrove, Hoxton Whores, Fergie, Funk d’void, Kraymon and Steve Payne. He continues to play Jackin’ House for warm-up sets, while for his main sets you can expect a more Progressive/Tech sound. Whatever he’s playing though, he always has the dance floor busy thanks to his fun attitude to music and the fact that as soon as he steps behind the decks it’s clear to everyone how much he loves what he does.
